That didn’t take long, did it? Just a few hours after the official launch ofThe Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, well-known Zelda speedrunner Carl “gymnast86” Wernicke successfully completed the game in1.34.33. The run contains spoilers, obviously. Naturally, this record will likely be broken within a few days, but just over 90 minutes is a fantastic baseline time to work with. Wernicke released abrief videogoing over his route and someone of the tricks he utilised.“The progress on this speedrun will update fast so if you’re seeing this video a few days after it’s been published, it’s probably outdated, and you should seek newer updates and videos about the run,” he cautions. He notes that the speedrun exploits prevalent inBreath of the Wild, like wind-bombing and BLSS, no longer work in Tears of the Kingdom, “From what we can tell, almost none of the glitches that were present in Breath of the Wild seemed to have made it into Tears of the Kingdom.” That being said, he’s not ruling out that the community may find new ways to activate these glitches as the run continues to progress.RELATED:The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom - How To Roast & Cook
The route itself contains major spoilers, so we’re not going to detail it here. We will say that the run utilises the new “fuse” power that Link has in his arsenal, combining weapons to create more powerful weapons.
He explains that using Tears of the Kingdom’s amiibo functionality is likely optimal, as it is in Breath of the Wild, but his run doesn’t incorporate it. It will likely become mandatory for world record attempts as the run becomes more optimised.
Theleaderboards on Speedrun.comdon’t open until May 26, giving the community time to optimise the route before official runs are submitted. For now, Wernicke’s run appears to be the de-facto world record.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’sAny% runis currently down to 23.42 by Player5, who set a new record last week.
