WhenGame of Throneswas released in 2011, the world was hooked to George R.R. Martin’s amazing imagination. Although the finale may have been a bit of a letdown to some fans, the rest of the 8 seasons kept everyone at the edge of their seats. The series ended up being a full-blown hit globally. But that may have never happened if the author had decided to take the same route that J. K. Rowling did with theHarry Potterfranchise.

The feature films route may have worked wonders for fans of the wizarding world. However, Martin revealed that there was only one reason that he never wanted his books to be adapted into standalone films instead of a series.
Why George R. R. Martin did not want to create Game of Thrones films
Game of Thronesfans might have loved the idea of watching their favorite characters like Daenerys Targaryen, Jon Snow, and even Ned Stark on the big screen. However, that was never on the cards for the author,George R. R. Martin.
In an interview withTime Magazine, just two short years before the HBO series reached its end, the 75-year-old revealed his reasoning as to why it was something he did not want happening. The author admitted he had met with David Benioff and D. B. Weiss multiple times. However, he never left feeling satisfied.

When the book started hitting the bestseller list, and Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings movies started coming out, I immediately started getting interest from Hollywood.
After all, everyone Martin had met told him the same thing, that the plot and number of characters were too much to handle. He stated,“It was all, “Oh, we’ll make one film, and if it’s a big hit, we’ll make more.” Well, that doesn’t always work out, as you found out if you know about Philip Pullman’sHis Dark Materials. If the first one doesn’t work out, you never get the rest of the story.”

Luckily for Martin, sticking to his guns ended up paying off for the author. After all, the series adaptation wound up being picked up by HBO shortly after.
However, his luck ran out after just a few short seasons. In fact, by the end of the series, the author had not been a part of the planning for the plot or how the show could end.

George R. R. Martin opens up about his involvement in theGame of Thronesseries
Ever since the beginning of theGame of Thronesseries, George R. R. Martin has been staunch in his decision to have a 10-season-long series. However, unfortunately for the author, that did not end up happening. In an interview withThe New York Times, he revealed that he did not have a hand in creating the last 4 seasons of the HBO show.
By Seasons 5 and 6, and certainly 7 and 8, I was pretty much out of the loop.

Martin was then asked why the creators behindGame of Throneshad left him out. Although he did not have a solid answer, the author stated,“I don’t know — you have to ask Dan and David.”
One Horrific Targaryen Death From George R. R. Martin’s Lore Could Put Game of Thrones’s Infamous Red Wedding to Shame
With Martin taking a back seat in the adaptations of the final seasons, it is no wonder that the finale ended up falling short in the eyes of fans and viewers alike.
Luckily that has not been the case for the spin-off series,House of the Dragon. After all, the author has been a co-creator and executive producer on the show for the last two seasons. But that hasn’t stopped him from pointing outa few glaring flaws.
