Adam Pearson is someone who never let life’s struggles hold him back. You might know him as an actor or a disability rights advocate. But behind his struggles is a condition called neurofibromatosis, a rare genetic disorder that has formed his path in many ways.

Diagnosed as a young boy, Pearson’s way has been fraught with peril. Yet, he has turned his condition into a platform for change, awareness, and even Hollywood success. Let’s take a closer look at what neurofibromatosis is, how it changed the actor’s life, and how he’s used it to overcome constraints and enkindle courage.

Breaking down what neurofibromatosisis

Neurofibromatosis (or NF for short) is a rare genetic disorder that causes tumors to grow on nerve tissues in the body. These tumors are usually non-cancerous, but they can still cause serious health problems.

Sometimes, these tumors are visible on the skin, while other times they’re inside the body, causing pain or other complications. According toNational Institute of Neurological Disorders and Strokes, there are three main types of neurofibromatosis:

Adam Pearson as Rosenthal, a role that contrasts with the film’s protagonist, Mabel, played by Jess Weixler, who struggles to connect with him

Type 1 (NF1):This is the most common form, affecting about 1 in 3,500 people. It usually shows up in childhood and comes with symptoms like light brown spots on the skin (called café-au-lait spots), soft lumps under the skin (neurofibromas), tiny bumps on the eye’s iris (Lisch nodules), and even bone issues. People with NF1 might also face learning difficulties or have a higher risk of developing some cancers.

Type 2 (NF2):This type is much rarer, affecting about 1 in 25,000 people. It’s known for causing tumors on the nerves responsible for hearing and balance. Most people with NF2 experience hearing loss, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), or balance problems, often starting in their late teens or early adulthood.

Sebastian Stan as Edward, a character suffering through a similar condition as Pearson

Schwannomatosis:The rarest form of NF. It causes painful tumors on nerves but doesn’t usually come with the same skin issues as NF1.

The tricky part about neurofibromatosis is that it’s unpredictable. Some people have very mild symptoms, while others, like Adam Pearson, face much tougher adversities.

How did Adam Pearson develop neurofibromatosis?

Adam Pearson was born in Croydon, England, with his identical twin brother, Neil. As babies, they looked almost the same, making it hard to tell them apart. Things started to change when Pearson was five. After a bump on his head, it never really went away.

After visiting multiple doctors and specialists, Pearson was diagnosed with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). This condition causes tumors to grow on nerve tissues, and in Pearson’s case, they begin to develop on his face. By the time he was eight, his facial features had changed noticeably due to the growth of the tumors.

AsPEOPLEreported, Neil, his twin brother, was also diagnosed with NF1. However, Neil’s symptoms were entirely different. He didn’t have any visible tumors but later developed other complications, like short-term memory loss and epilepsy. This shows how unpredictable neurofibromatosis can be—even in identical twins.

Pearson’s journey hasn’t been easy. Over the years, he has undergone 39 surgeries to remove excess tumors. Unfortunately, the tumors often grow back, making it a constant battle. On top of that, he lost vision in one eye because of the condition. Despite this, the star has an incredibly positive outlook on life.

How Neurofibromatosis Opened Doors for Adam Pearson

While neurofibromatosis threw its fair share of hurdles at Adam Pearson, but it also opened doors he never saw coming. Pearson began his career in TV production behind the scenes. One day, he got a call from a charity supporting people with facial differences.

They mentioned a film needing an actor with a facial disfigurement. That film wasUnder the Skin, starringScarlett Johansson. Pearson decided to take a chance, and just like that, his acting journey started.

Since then, Adam Pearson has been making a name for himself in the film industry. He starred in the 2018 movieChained for Life, which delves into how Hollywood often portrays people with disabilities.

More recently, he worked alongsideSebastian Stanin the 2024 filmA Different Man,playing a powerful characterwith a facial disfigurement. Pearson isn’t just acting—he’s breaking stereotypes and showing that people with disabilities can take on meaningful roles.

He doesn’t see his disability as a limitation. In fact, the 39-year-old believes (per PEOPLE) his“disability has opened way more doors than it’s closed.”And he’s not just talking the talk—he’s walking the walk.

Outside of acting, Pearson is a passionate advocate for disability rights. He’s presented several documentaries, includingHorizon: My Amazing Twin, where he explored his relationship with his brother and their shared condition. Another standout project wasThe Ugly Face of Disability Hate Crime,a documentary shedding light on the discrimination faced by people with disabilities.
