It was revealed that Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) was the one who killed the Night King in the final season ofGame of Thrones. However, the seemingly inevitable Jon Snow (Kit Harington) was among the other characters that showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss thought might never have dealt the death blow against the Night King. They eventually admitted that they had never considered himbecause “he’s always saving the day”.

Well, there was a lot of backlash against Arya’s choice to kill the Night King instead of Jon Snow, who would have been the more obvious choice. The writers looked at other options instead of going with the too-simple plan of Jon killing the Night King. The latter character, played by Vladimir Furdik after Richard Brake left the show in season 4, emerged as one of the show’s most notable adversaries as the HBO production drew to an end.

Game of Thrones: The Writers Didn’t Want Jon Snow to Kill the Night King?

David Benioffand D.B. Weiss, the writers ofGame of Thrones, chose to go against the grain and alter the expected result in typicalGame of Thronesfashion. They made the astute decision to have Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) destroy the Night King rather than Jon Snow (Kit Harington). This twist not only surprised viewers but also ascertained the show’s dedication to defying traditional hero tropes.

Other characters, including the Hound, were also considered before Arya was chosen. The showrunners talk about their choice to have Arya kill the Night King in James Hibberd’s bookFire Cannot Kill A Dragon: Game of Thrones and the Official Untold Story of the Epic Series.“Several hero candidates”, according to Hibberd, were taken into consideration. Meanwhile, Benioff stated:

Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen

“It had to be somebody with believable access to Valyrian steel. We didn’t want it to be Jon because he’s always saving the day. We talked about the Hound at one point, but we wanted his big thing to be Clegane Bowl. Ultimately it wouldn’t have felt right if it was Jon or Brienne or the Hound.”

The Hound, Sandor Clegane, certainly helped Arya Stark out in the battle against the Night King, but Jon’s contribution was much more than just on the field of battle. He had a major influence on Arya’s development into the accomplished warrior she eventually became.

Emilia Clarke on the Shocking Twist in theGame of ThronesFinale

The final draft of theGame of Thronesscript was read byEmilia Clarkeseveral times. The words that disclosed Daenerys Targaryen’s terrible fate—a character she has played on the immensely popular HBO series for almost ten years—were read seven times, the actress claimed. She recalled while tellingEW:

“What, what, what,WHAT!?Because it comes out of f—king nowhere. I’m flabbergasted. Absolutely never saw that coming.”

She recalled that the actress had just returned to London after wrapping up filming forSolo: A Star Wars Story. When she landed, she received the scripts electronically, and she got ready when she got home. She stated:

“I got myself situated. I got my cup of tea. I had to physically prepare the space and then begin reading them.. I cried. And I went for a walk. I walked out of the house and took my keys and phone and walked back with blisters on my feet. I didn’t come back for five hours. I’m like, ‘How am I going to do this?’”

Clarke boarded a plane to Belfast two days later to attend the season table read.As it happened, Kit Harington, who played Jon Snow, was seated next to her on the plane. to experience the story with all of his castmates for the first time, Harington purposefully had not read the scripts yet. Meanwhile, the flight frustrated Clarke, who was bursting at the seams to discuss her plot. With a stutter, she said,

“This literally sums up Kit and I’s friendship. Boy! Would you? Seriously? You’re just not?…”

The TV show finale is regarded by many viewers as one of the worst in television history. Not only did the finale not live up to the hype, but it also took away from the show’s core identity and the things that first set it apart.
