Steven Spielberg has made many brilliant movies in his decades-long career. From shooting one of the first major motion pictures in the ocean to bringing the dinosaurs to the big screen throughJurassic Park, Spielberg’s filmography contains widely acclaimed movies of all kinds and genres. While the shadows of his life and upbringing can be felt in many of his movies, it is his movie,The Fabelmans, that is the closest to Spielberg’s heart.

Loosely based on his life and upbringing, the semi-autobiographical novel sheds light on Spielberg’s family and his love for the craft of filmmaking. Yet, making the movie could have seriously backfired and ruined his career had it not been Spielberg directing.
Steven Spielberg’s Daring Action Which Could Have RuinedThe Fabelmans
Steven Spielberg‘sThe Fabelmansis a semi-autobiographical movie based on the director’s life and adolescence. Adeeply personal tale, it is also a movie that Spielberg has been wanting to make for the longest time, pretty much since 1999 (viaThe New York Times Magazine). Yet, when it came to finally making the film, Spielberg adopted an unusual strategy.
“I could never solve when I read it”: Steven Spielberg Had No Luck Finding the Answer to 1 Mystery in Schindler’s List That Never Needs to be Answered
As per the movie’s lead, aka the one who portrays a ‘young Steven Spielberg’, Gabriel LaBelle, the filmmaker did not really tell the actors all the whats and hows of making the film. Instead, he let them be naturally curious and pry the information and create their own approach.
While at the DGA Threatres back in 2022, covered byDeadline, the young artist remarked,

He didn’t really tell me anything. That made me nervous. He didn’t sit down and say ‘when I was 5….’ I had to track him down.
Even Judd Hirsch, who starred as Uncle Boris in the film, revealed the trust and faith Spielberg put in his actors whilst making the award-winning film.

He doesn’t rehearse. It’s not going to be, ‘How do I play it?’ before filming. Steven is confident in the people he cast. We didn’t have real direction in how well to play the part. He (LaBelle) was Steven and I was that crazy man.
An unconventional approach that could have gravely misfired had it been any other director, Spielberg’s ultimate trust in his actors and their instincts made the movie an even more raw and impactful deal.

Seth Rogan, who starred as the favorite uncle of Spielberg in the movie (viaDeadline), revealed toPeoplethe filming ofThe Fabelmanswas an extremely emotional affair.
It was a very emotional experience. He [Spielberg] was crying a lot on set. It’s very directly based on his life and pretty much everything that happens in the movie is something that happened to him.

Well, despite the many challenges associated with bringing his own story to the screen, Spielberg’s willingness to embrace the emotional depth of the project resulted in a raw and impactful film that is now a testament to his remarkable talent as a filmmaker.
The Fabelmanscan be streamed on Hulu.
