Ethan Hawke has an impressive filmography thanks to his long-standing career in Hollywood. Making his film debut withExplorersin 1985, he continues to expand his portfolio with a new project,Blue Moon. This project is quite special also because he is reuniting with Richard Linklater, who will be directing the movie.

However, their reunion wasn’t an easy task. In a new interview, the former delved into the project details, stating that the director made him wait for over a decade, and the reason will surprise you.

Their previous collaboration includesBefore Sunrisetrilogy,Boyhood(2014),Waking Life(2001), andLast Flag Flying(2017) among others. The duo is bringing another interesting project,Blue Moon,which has an interesting backstory for the actor.

During a masterclass at the Venice Film Festival viaVariety, Ethan Hawke shared the unique story of howBlue Mooncame into existence. But before the same, he revealed that he had eyes on the project since a decade ago. He recalled first reading the script 12 years ago and immediately falling in love with it.
He recalled telling the director, “I love it, let’s do it. We gotta make this movie.”However, Linklater immediately dashed his hopes with an unexpected response. He felt that the actor, who was 39 then, was“still too attractive”to play the part of Lorenz Hart.

While getting a role for good looks is quite common in filmmaking, Linklater’s rejection was an oddball to figure out.
He shared,

He’s like, ‘Cool, we’re going to make it, but we need to wait a while.’ Why do we need to wait a while? He said, ‘You’re still too attractive. We gotta wait til you’re a little less attractive.’
The director eventually asked him to wait for a few years before getting into this part. He eventually asked theMoon Knightactor to keep the script in the drawer and keep on checking every couple of years whether they were ready to get into it or not.

Over the years, the duo revisited theBlue Moonscript several times. Despite their mutual excitement about the project, the conclusion was always the same – the time wasn’t right.
He told in the same event,
Let’s just put it in a drawer, and every couple of years let’s read it and see if we’re ready or not.
This process could have easily frustrated most actors, but Hawke put his trust in the director’s vision.

Eventually, his patience bore great results as he received a call from the latter, who eventually decided to move forward with the project.
He saw me on an interview, I was on the Jimmy Fallon show or something last year, and he called me up and he said, ‘Hey, I saw you on Jimmy Fallon!’ I said, ‘Oh great, how’d it go?’ He said, ‘Oh, it was fine. Let’s make Blue Moon.’ Like, go to hell.
Despite the initial struggle, the duo eventually moved forward with the movie. The film has recently wrapped its production with the project revolving around the final days of Lorenz Hart.
