Vinland Sagatells one of the most compelling stories ever known in the history of any entertainment medium, and not just anime. Its masterfully woven narrative rivals and arguably even surpasses other Western adaptations of the Viking era.It also boasts its meticulous attention to historical detail and nuanced character writing.

Now, what’s even more interesting is that some of the most important characters from the series are all inspired by certain historical figures in real life. Among such characters, there is particularly one who is basically the central attraction of this saga, Thorfinn. However, surprisingly, Thorfinn Karlsefni’s life goals are completely different from the anime’s depiction of him as a revengeful warrior.
Real-Life Thorfinn Was Nothing Like The Anime/Manga Thorfinn!
Although the protagonist ofVinland Saga, Thorfinn, shares a similar name with his historical counterpart, Thorfinn Karlsefni; their stories couldn’t be more different. Unlike how the anime depicts Thorfinn as a revengeful warrior, the real Thorfinn Karlsefni was an explorer at heart. He courageously followed in the steps of Leif Erikson, who braved the rough seas to set up a Viking settlement in the unknown lands of Vinland, which is in North America.
While Thorfinn from the series hada thirst for vengeance, the real Thorfinn Karlsefni was driven by much more practical considerations.Makoto Yukimura’sidea of Thorfinn in the manga was just an artistic liberty taken from the actual history.

“There isn’t that big of a difference”: Makoto Yukimura’s Vision for Vinland Saga’s Ending Is Why His Manga Is Superior to Hajime Isayama’s Attack on Titan
The anime Thorfinn is rather a product of the author’s imagination, solely intended to capture the audience’s imagination through his complex personality and over-expanding relationships. However, the realThorfinn Karlsefniwill always be remembered as a great adventurer in history, and his story will remain a testament to the bravery and cunning of the Viking explorers.
The Probabale Inspiration Behind The Naming of The Series,Vinland Saga
Thorfinn Karlsefni’s trip to Vinland also could be the very reason behind the series’ naming. Along with Leif Erikson’s father, Eric the Red, they ventured throughout the seas to read Vinland, and their travel logs are now called the “Vinland sagas.”
That is most likely whythe series is known asVinland Saga! Now as the story unfolds, it seems more and more possible that Thorfinn, the young warrior-turned-slave, would follow in the footsteps of his historical counterpart and finally find their peaceful Vinland.

Vinland Saga’s Ending Is Not Final Yet, Makoto Yukimura Will Do Something He Hasn’t Done in 20 Long Years to End the Series
With other characters having similar real-life historical references such as Askeladd, Thors, and Thorkell,Vinland Sagahas become one of those historical pieces of media that is entertaining as well as informative. It certainly adds richness to the narrative by drawing from the pages of history, making it a grander experience, not only for its fans but also for the entire entertainment media.
