Beyond the Swirling Sands is a main mission in Drakenhold and one of Unicorn Overlord’s largest battle stages. It introduces a few new battle mechanics that make it uniquely difficult to complete.

The final objective of this mission is defeating Magellan, the local ruler turned Zenoiran ally and conquering the desert region for the liberation army and freeing it from Zenoira’s influence. Here is how it’s done.

Navigating The Sandstorm
There are two ways to complete the mission,take out Magellan quicklyand ignore everything else.Or go slowlyand capture everything step-by-step until you reach the final command post. However, since the battle stage is very large and the sand slows things down considerably, there is a real chance of you losing the fight because thebattle timerran out.
If the battle timer does run out, you can use Hollowed Corne Ash to reset it to full.
The victory condition is defeating Magellan, who’s stationed at thefar right of the map, everything else is just a smokescreen. There are three main difficulties you’ll need to overcome before you’re able to reach Magellan. Slow land unit speeds, sandstorms and the thieves.
Walking On Sand
Walking on the sand with a cavalry or infantry leader will make them go quite slowly. The easiest solution to this is usingFlying characterslike Fran as leader. This is nice to have but not a requirement for clearing the stage. Land units are slow, but they’re notthatslow, especially if you keep to the roads. You’ll also get threeLight Feathersat the beginning of battle. Using this item will allow a unit to traverse the sands without hindrance.
Sandstorms
Sandstorms appear intermittently andreduce your visiondrastically, essentially making you blind to what’s going on. While watchtowers do remedy this problem to a certain extent by increasing your vision radius, it’s not really a requirement. Just keep a vaguemental pictureof which units are where in your mind and you’ll have no trouble.
As soon as a sandstorm starts raging, the next problem appears: thieves who like to usePlunderfrom a distance and run away.If they make it back to their command post that gold is lost forever.Having a flying unit won’t help you catch the thieves; the only way to recover the gold is to either use aValor Skill like Wild Rushor force them to attack you by using Provoke or theBeckoning Chime. I’d advise against chasing the thieves as it’s a bigger hassle than it’s worth. Gold is easy to come by; time is lost forever.
The only two named flying units that you can recruit at this point are Fran andOchlys. But, you can pay a Gryphon Knight mercenary to join your party as well.
Unicorn Overlord: Difficulty Explained
Unicorn Overlord has five different difficulty settings. Here’s an explanation of them each.
Recruiting Enemies
There are two types of enemies in this stage:yellow outlineandred outline. The red outline ones belong to Magellan, and the yellow ones are dissidents fighting against his rule. The two enemy types are fighting each other but will also engage with you in battle. There are three yellow units stationed at command posts that can be convinced to turn to your side after you get their health low.
The units you may recruit are calledCatorina,Bernd, andCamilla. Catorina and Bernd can be recruited by simply fighting them, while Camilla will be recruited by having Catorina’s unit talk to her. Their location is marked in the screenshot above.
If you fight Camilla before recruiting Catorina, she will not switch sides.
Recruiting these units can help take the pressure off of you if you’re struggling with low health and damage problems. But if your only problem is the sandstorm and thieves, there is no advantage in going out of your way to recruit these characters.Recruited units won’t join the liberation after the battle stage is over.
Defeating Magellan
After you get a clear shot at him, defeating Magellan is just like any other battle. He only dealspure physical damage,so a Hoplite like Hodrick can easily keep him in check. Alternatively, thieves and Gryphon Knights have natural evasion that lets them dodge almost all of Magellan’s attacks.
The rest of his unit consists of a soldier, a cleric, and a mage. All easily handled by regular units. After defeating him, you’ll be able torecruit him to the liberationand claim the following rewards.
Unicorn Overlord can be a bit overwhelming at times, as themore characters you recruit, the harder it becomes to finalize yourunit formationsas new options get thrown into the mix.
