Combat in Unicorn Overlord revolves around how players set up a unit’s formation, which gear it comes equipped with, how each character’s skills are set up, and which items can be used in battle. Despite being an auto-battle system, combat is extremely intricate, with tons of minute decisions that can mean the difference between victory and defeat. The biggest decision? Unit Formations.

Unicorn Overlord: 10 Tips & Tricks For Beginners

Unicorn Overlord is an incredibly dense game with tons of mechanics. Here are some tips and tricks to help new players get started.

With over 70 recruitable characters to choose from, each with their ownbasic and advanced classes, there are a near-infinite number of combinations of a single Unit Formation you can come up with, each more viable than the last. Considering this, I centered this guide around what worked in my experience, where my primary concerns were synergy and getting through to the mid-game topromote my characters. Here’s the breakdown.

Unicorn Overlord

All-Rounder Unit

Alain (Lord), Josef (Paladin), Yahna (Witch), Berenice (Sellsword)

The All-Rounder unit is meant to be adecent answer to everythingby having no obvious weaknesses. This is where I’d suggest putting in themost investmentin the form of levels, weapons, armor, and accessories.

I like to putAlainin at least one unit because there are somerecruitable charactersthat only join if you have Alain on the field (e.g., Melisandre). He also has access to the absolute best Valor skill in the game in the form ofValorous Order, giving allies in an areafirst strikein their next battle with 20% increased defense and attack.

Unicorn Overlord - Scarlett and the Logo

Josef is a broken unit early gamebecause of his ability to follow up multiple times withPursuitto clean up everythingandhe has heals.Yahna is necessary to deal with armored unitsthat can shrug off physical damage.

Bereniceis the star of this unit because of her class, Sellsword. Sellswords get access to the ability‘Following Slash’. Any time an ally gets hit, Following Slash activates, prompting Berenice to counterattack. And the best part is that if Following Slash lands, you recover 1 PP, meaning it’s infinitely repeatable as long as you keep hitting. This is whythieves and Gryphon Knights are a bad match for this unit,as if Berenice can’t land attacks, your DPS goes down significantly.

Unicorn Overlord

Equip Berenice with a Lapis Pendant and a Carnelian Pendant to her +1 PP and +1 AP. Following Slash recovers +1 PP on a successful hit, and Killing Chain recovers +1 AP if the enemy dies. Stack accuracy on her gear to give her confirmed hits of Following Slash, allowing her to obliterate everything. Sellswords are also an excellent pairing with a Hoplite as a main tank.

Cavalry Unit

Clive (Knight), Adel (Knight), Scarlett (Priestess), Rolf (Archer)

I like to have at least one variation of a cavalry unit present at any time that can serve as a quick way tomow down annoying infantryunits clogging the screen. On top of that, cavalry units areextremely fast land units, allowing them to quickly cover massive distances.

Clive and Adel are both the same classwith the same abilities. You’d think this would be a bad thing, but no. Their buff ability ‘Cavalier Call’ activates before attacking with any active skill, giving all characters in the frontrow+20% attack. This stacks. Meaning you may have three cavalry units in the front row all buff each other up in increasing increments. The result can be devastating, especially if you’re ahead in initiative.

Vanillaware

Rolfserves the dual purpose of being able todeal with flying charactersand having the ability to provideRanged Assiststo nearby allied units if he’s selected as a leader.Scarlett is the main healer/supportcharacter here and offers the ability to dealmassive magic damageto armored units.

Flying Unit

Fran (Gryphon Knight), Bruno (Gladiator), Sharon (Cleric), Chloe (Soldier)

A Flying Unit’s strength lies in its ability tocross impassable terrainandavoid land unitscompletely. Flying units are extremely useful when circling around enemy lines to take outwatchtowersandranged magical assistunits.

Fran is likely going to be your first flying unit unless you decide tokill Mandrinand get15 Divine Shards torecruit Ochlysearly. Despite her relatively early appearance,Fran is a beast in battle. She’s a frontline unit withhigh evasion, self-healing, and row damage. Pair her withBrunoin the front row so that he can soak up some of the damage heading her way and dish out some of his own.

To complement Fran,Chloe deals column damage(in a straight line) with her Long Thrust, and she can make Fran even more powerful by buffing her physical attack.Sharon’s Cleric classstacks healing on top of healing, allowing this unit to remain alive no matter how dire the circumstances.

Flying Units can speedrun through Sigil Trials by ignoring the battle and heading straight for the command post.

Defensive Unit

Hodrick (Hoplite), Mordon (Warrior), Selvie (Shaman), Aubin (Housecarl)

A Defensive Unit’s main job is toremain alive while protecting crucial chokepointslike your own command post or useful garrisons.Hodrick’s Hoplite class is the core of this unitand what allows it to facetank everything that comes at it except magic. Luckily, magic users don’t typically go to the frontlines to attack your command post, which is where this unit is almost always going to be stationed.

Selvie’s Shaman class is an extremely powerful debuff classthat reduces enemy attacks and defenses in equal measure and consumes their PP and AP, so they can’t do anything.Aubin and Mordon are the DPSin this unit as they provide a good mix of single target and AoE damage.
