It’s hard to overstate Taylor Sheridan’s impact on the modern Western landscape. Since hitting big in the 2010s, Sheridan has penned several great characters for both the big and small screen and is responsible for reshaping the Western trope in the medium of television withYellowstone.

But while John Dutton fromYellowstoneand Alejandro fromSicarioare often the most common picks when it comes to the discourse surrounding Sheridan’s best characters, Sylvester Stallone’s Dwight often gets overlooked. As for his brilliance, showrunner Terence Winter reveals the aspects that contributed to making Dwight such a well-rounded protagonist.
Tarrence Winter Elaborates on Dwight’s Excellence as a Character
Like any other great show,Tulsa Kingbuilds upon its strong cast of well-written characters, with whom fans can connect. Stallone’s lead Dwight is arguably the best of the bunch, as on top of being a crime boss, who commences on his journey to build a crime empire of his own with a bunch of misfits, he’s also pretty likable and relatable. Speaking of Dwight, writerTerence Winterelaborated (viaTHR) on the qualities that makes him so engaging with the viewers.
Denzel Washington Knows Sylvester Stallone Can’t Beat Him in Boxing: “I’d knock him out”
While his surprising knowledge and dialogues are major contributors to his popularity, which is amplified by Dwight’s sense of humor, unlike other mafia bosses,Tulsa Kingdoesn’t shy away from painting him in a more humane light. Winter stressed that fans can relate to the mob boss’ struggle with everyday hurdles, which further adds to his likability among fans.
Giving Dwight surprising knowledge or surprising dialogue is always fun. I think the audience really loves it. The other thing is seeing his character in situations that are familiar to the rest of us — like you never get to see a mob boss deal with the DMV, or have to wait in line at Starbucks. It’s fun to see him navigate the world that the rest of us have to navigate.

But apart from Winter andTaylor Sheridan, Stallone too deserves the credit for Dwight’s success among fans.
Sylvester Stallone’s Experience Assisted the Tulsa King Writers With Dwight
GivenSylvester Stallone‘s history in showbiz, which extends far beyond the realm of acting, theFirst Bloodstar’s experience in other filmmaking fields came in handy during the creation of Dwight. Winter added that, in some ways, Stallone had a better idea of who the mob boss really is, stressing that the actor is well aware of his strengths and weaknesses and“what his audience wants to see”.
You don’t just get an actor with Sly. You get a director, a writer, a producer, an editor — he’s done everything. So he’s really an incredible partner to have, as he just understands the craft of filmmaking in general. He understands who he is, what his audience wants to see, what works for him, and what doesn’t.

With the second season putting further emphasis on his character growth, it’ll be interesting to see what the future holds for the show and Dwight.
