I don’t know what you’re gonna do, but I’m definitely planning to grab this game and check if it’s as good as it looks. It’s obviously not the same kind of game at all, but in terms of pure coolness, it’s up there withTouhou Luna Nights. Speaking of which, its developer Team Ladybug is working on anofficialLodossgamefor the30th anniversary of the franchise. There’s a very short but nice early access of the game on Steam.
Phoenixx Inc. previously releasedGensou Skydrift, aTouhou3D racing game.
If you’ve never heard about it,TouhouProjectis a series of doujin games, as in Japanese indie games, made by Team Shangai Alice, a “group” solely composed of a dude called ZUN. The firstTouhougame released in 1996, and the series became incredibly popular in early 2000s.Touhougames are technically danmaku / shmups, but the biggest and most popular aspects ofTouhoulies in its characters and music, all composed by ZUN. Each newTouhougame can be considered a new album he’s releasing.
ZUN is pretty much the most popular doujin game developer in the world, andTouhouhas been a huge influence on pop culture and gaming, especially on new, young developers. The perfect example is Toby Fox.
TouhouProjectis one of the biggest icons of Japanese culture, and the franchise definitely had one of the biggest fandom in the world among Japanese franchises, after stuff likeDragon ball. However, it started to slightly decline in early 2010s, with the emergence of phenomenons such asKancolleand later onFGOandAzur Lane. Thanks to ZUN’s full acceptance of any kind of derivative work and usage of his characters, with no licensing strings attached, theTouhoufandom has striven through billions of fanarts, trillions of music arrangements and remixes, doujin anime and manga. MultipleTouhoufangames developed by various studios regularly release each year.Touhou Mechanical Scrolleryis one of them.Touhouis so rich beyond the original “official” danmaku games by ZUN, it’s far easier to find someone who knowsTouhouthrough the fan content than through the original games.
The latest “Official” Touhou game by ZUN (personal blog)wasTouhou 17 〜 Wily Beast and Weakest Creature. It released on Steam back in September 2019.You can read more about it here.
Update:Phoenixx Inc and Mikosansahoannouncedon April 22 thatTouhou Mechanical Scrollerywas delayed to May 1 to “further improve the game’s quality”.
