Captain America is one of the most revered and respected superheroes across the world, whether it be cinema or comic books. Since the start of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the character has embodied courage, integrity, selflessness, and an unwavering commitment to do the right thing. So when Chris Evans’ Cap passed on the shield, many knew it would be a Herculean task to fill his shoes.

And it certainly seemed so when Wyatt Russell’s John Walker stepped in for the job in one of Marvel’s best series,The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. As was expected, his Homelander-esque portrayal left many fans severely disappointed, proving that the shield is not just an object but a symbol of hope that not everyone can carry.

John Walker’s Diabolical Captain America inThe Falcon and the Winter Soldier

Captain America is not a persona that one can adopt, for it has more to do with the person behind the mask than it does with the mask. InCaptain America: The First Avenger, we clearly sawChris Evans‘ Steve Rogers had all the markings of being a leader as great as Captain America even before he got that super soldier serum and became a hunk of a man.

Since then, Rogers consistently proved why he deserved the shield and the mantle, going above and beyond to save humanity from the worst of existential threats. From lying down on a grenade to bravely standing up to Thanos and his alien army with a broken shield, not anyone can be the unwavering leader of the Avengers.

The importance and moral integrity of the character became more obvious whenWyatt Russell‘s John Walker took on the mantle inThe Falcon and the Winter Soldier. One that introduced a darker, more unsettling version of Captain America, Walker’s version sharply contrasted with the virtuous legacy left by Steve Rogers.

Initially, there was some hope, but that soon disappeared when he became a ‘hero’ with ruthless rage and volatile nature, showcasing Walker’s willingness to cross moral lines that Rogers would never have even considered. This diabolical transformation, even after all these years, continues to shock fans.

Marvel Fans Still Cannot Get Over Wyatt Russell’s Captain America

Wyatt Russell’s John Walker, unlike Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers, appeared too eager to live up to the symbol of hope and heroism that the vibranium shield represents. His eagerness and willingness soon led to a version of the characterthat acted more like a villainthan the morally unwavering hero that Rogers represented.

Although his portrayal has sparked intense debate and strong reactions since the very moment he took on the shield, one scene in particular has fans feeling outright disgusted, even after all these years.

The way this scene made me absolutely disgusted he was the wielder of caps shield is a masterpiece

He’s literally just Homelander Cap 🤣

they did a great job making this character very easy to dislike 😭 in the beginning I had some empathy, but from then on he’s downright deplorable.

The fact it was Nico was even worse. Nico said earlier in the season he had been a HUGE fan of Captain America growing up and the main reason he volunteered to be a SS. Can never forgive John for that and defilement of the shield. It was not what Steve stood for!

It is a harsh reminder that not everyone is worthy of the star shield; even fans acknowledged that despite this scene making them disgusted, it helped them understand the worthiness of Captain America. Even after the end ofThe Falcon and the Winter Soldier, the conversation around Walker’s Captain America continues.

While some fans love the complexity and brutality that Walker brought to the character, others are unable to fully shake the impact of seeing the iconic shield in the hands of a man who embodied such a different set of values.
