It was the year 2017, and fans of the DCEU finally had a movie that not only met expectations, but exceeded them.Wonder Woman, starring Gal Gadot, and directed by Patty Jenkins, became one of the best movies under the banner, and gained the highest score on Rotten Tomatoes, a feat it has maintained even today. It spawned a sequel –Wonder Woman 1984, but unfortunately, it failed to hold on to the success of its predecessor.
But even then, the franchise was supposed to have another sequel – Wonder Woman 3, whose script was even completed by Jenkins. Unfortunately, the story allegedly didn’t meet expectations, and the idea was scrapped. Jenkins left the franchise soon after, and then the whole of DCEU was rebooted to make way for James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU. But what does that mean for the future of one of the best superheroes from DC Comics?
Patty Jenkins Gives Hope to Wonder Woman Fans
Patty Jenkins is the woman behind bothWonder Woman(2017) andWonder Woman 1984(2020). StarringGal Gadotin the lead role, the first movie made a huge splash, with a 93% score on the Tomatometer, whereas the sequel only scored a meager 58%. But still, hope for a third movie was prevalent, until the DCEU was rebooted. And while things looked bleak for a while, a recent comment by Patty Jenkins has reignited that hope in the heart of fans.
In a conversation withTalking Pictures Podcast, Patty Jenkins said that DC is not interested, claiming,“No. They’re not interested in doing any Wonder Woman for the time being.”
What fans took from this is that while the studio might not have any imminent plans for the character, or a potential sequel to the 2020 movie, there is still hope for it in the future. The “time being” has ignited a little spark of hope among fans that the character is not completely gone. This is especially due to the fact that one of the projects announced byJames Gunn for DCU‘sChapter One: Gods and MonstersisParadise Lost– a show that is set in Themyscira – the place where Princess Diana/ Wonder Woman is born.

Whether the show at all brings Diana into the picture, or will focus on the rest of the Amazons, is still a mystery. And even then, we are not sure if Gal Gadot will reprise her role of Diana in the story, or we will get a new version of the character, like with Superman. But one thing we can speculate, or at least hope for, is that Wonder Woman still has a possible future in the upcoming DCU.
Patty Jenkins Has Sympathy For Gunn & Safran
WhatJames Gunnand Peter Safran have taken on to accomplish with the DCU is a big ask (and task). Starting withSupermanstarring David Corenswet, Gunn will be the man behind the scene – writing as well as directing the first project in the rebooted DCU. Patty Jenkins, who was associated with the franchise for quite some time, understands the work that the co-CEOs have undertaken and has sympathy for them. Continuing on the podcast, Jenkins said:
“It’s not an easy task, what’s going on with DC. James Gunn and Peter Safran have to follow their own heart into their own plans. So I don’t know the why of what they’re planning on doing or why, so I have sympathy for what a big job it is, and they have to follow their heart and do what they’re interested in, and do what they’ve got planned.”

Jenkins also said that she has no plans to come back to the franchise “for the time being, but probably, easily forever.” But whether it’s with her or without – hope for anotherWonder Woman projectis not completely gone, and fans are glad for it.
