The highest-grossing movie of 2023 –Barbie –has been at the tip of every moviegoers tongue, even before the movie was released. From its over-the-top, on-brand, and cleverly done marketing to the movie itself, there was a lot to unfold. Greta Gerwig did an amazing job as a director, even if she was snubbed by the Academy from a Best Director nomination, and she made sure that every cast member in the movie perfectly embodied their characters.

Barbie

Leading lady Margot Robbie’s Barbie was brought to life emmaculately, as was Ryan Gosling’s Ken. Nut they were not the only Barbie’s and Ken’s in the movie, and every other actor played their part perfectly – whether as a doll or as a human. As is apparent from the two Academy Award nominations for Ryan Gosling and America Ferrera for the Best Actor and Actress in a Supporting Role category. But even this seemingly perfect movie had some not so perfect moments, so let’s get into it!

Barbie Chevy sequence

BarbieMovie or Car Commercial?

The world of Barbie is blindingly pink, where everything seems perfect. But in the real world, not so much. But even in this real world, where every shot in the movie looked brilliantly shot, there was one sequence that many thought looked completely out of place. Can you guess what it is yet?

We are talking about the Chevrolet car sequence that is actually CGI-ed into the movie. The car scene with America Ferrera driving a Chevy Blazer EV SS to rescueMargot Robbie’s Barbie looked more like a car commercial than an actual scene in the movie. It was so corny and disproportionate with the rest of the movie that it almost felt like it was not part of the movie at all.

Fans React to the Barbie Chevy Commercial Scene

The fans of the movie were pretty disappointed of the scene, to say the least. Though ad placements in movies are nothing new, this one in particular looked quite unfitting. Fans think there is no way director Greta Gerwig or cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto had anything to do with it. And it is quite possible, as rumors suggest the scene was shot by the Second Unit of the movie.

But on the other hand, in a directors commentary, Gerwig said that Prieto has shot for car commercials previously, so it is possible that he was behind this sequence in the movie as well.

I’ve seen a lot of movies with car commercials in them, but this was by far the most revolting one

The only justification I can come up with for it is that it’s meant to look like shit to contrast barbieland but I think that that’s stupid if true💀

The car is completely CGI, pretty sure they had a car rig and slapped the CG on top
