Nothing is more terrifying and nerve-wracking than seeing these giant beasts take the battle up in the sky, and Season 1 of the hit HBO franchise delivered one of the most intense dragon fight sequences.

To bring this fight to the screen, director Greg Yaitanes drew inspiration fromSteven Spielberg’sJurassic Park. He toldEntertainment Weekly:
I went back to the original Jurassic Park because there was a sense of scale to the dinosaurs that I don’t think any of the subsequent films ever recaptured. [Director Steven Spielberg] knew he wanted to frame for height, and I took a lot of cues off what made the dinosaurs look so big and so interesting.
Spielberg is a master storyteller when it comes to these colossal creatures inflicting terror on the viewers. As mentioned, he has knowledge and technique on how to make these beasts look so huge on the screen, and applying the same format, Yaitanes managed to make Vhagar look so intimidating and Arrax so small. “There’s a lot of Jurassic Park in Storm’s End and in the air,” he noted.
This particular scene from the first season showed the real power of dragons and how uncontrollable they are despite having their own riders. This has been demonstrated in the show many times, that dragons have their own will and would only obey commands as they please.

Moreover, Yaitanes also creditedHow to Train Your Dragonand cinematographerRoger Deakinsfor serving as a huge inspiration in making the scene visually appealing. He said that after watching the animated film, he made some tweaks to the dragon sequence but not to the point that they would look evidently similar.

Like the scene between Aemond and Lucerys, the dragonseeds attempting to bond with Vermithor was “very much like a monster movie, like King Kong or Jurassic Park.”
