Gilmore Girls, created by Amy Sherman-Palladino is one of the most popular American comedy-drama series that first aired almost more than two decades ago. It had a good run between 2000 and 2007 for 7 seasons because of its endearing storyline and beautiful characterization. But despite its popularity, the show was canceled, leaving millions of fans disheartened.

However, even on this date, we often rewatch the episodes. Almost a decade later, Netflix revived the show with a four-part miniseries as a continuation of the series, but the main show was canceled for an unfortunate reason. If you don’t know, keep reading to learn about it.
WhyGilmore Girlswas canceled after season 7?
Despite the remarkable response from the audience to the beautiful story of a single mother, Lorelai Gilmore (Lauren Graham), and her daughter, Rory Gilmore (Alexis Bledel), the show was discontinued. There are many reasons behind the cancellation, one of which was the creators leaving the crew.
Amy Sherman-Palladino and her husband, Daniel Palladino had developed the series. After working seven days a week for six years, they demanded something fromWarner Bros.that was turned down by the studios. In an interview withEntertainment Weekly, Daniel revealed the reason why they decided to leave the show even after putting their life’s work on the show.

Why “Chucky” Was Canceled After Season 3, Explained
He shared that they had asked for a two-year contract instead of the one-year contract which they had. Daniel said, “We hit a brick wall with that.” He continued in the interview,
Also with our request for more personnel, more writers, a staff director for the [stage set] so that we didn’t personally have to go down on the set and oversee the directors and verify the knickknacks were on the right shelf at Lorelai’s Inn.

Another reason for the discontinuation ofGilmore Girlswas salary negotiations. As perVariety, the studio had quoted “money problem” as the key reason for cancellation. Reportedly, the studio couldn’t come to an agreement with the lead cast members regarding their salaries. In addition to that, schedule conflicts and creative differences also played an important role in the decision. Graham onceexplained,
We were trying to find a way we [she and Bledel] could have a slightly easier schedule, and there was really no way to do that and still have it be Gilmore Girls.

It seems all the odds were againstGilmore Girlsto return for another season.
Did other popular shows restrainGilmore Girlsfrom airing?
Well, around the same time, two more shows,Gossip GirlsandReapergained popularity on the CW network. More resources were then dedicated to those shows. After the main creators leftGilmore Girlsin the sixth season, it seemed like the right time to end the series.
In a Variety (viaCBR) statement, Dawn Ostoff, the spokesperson of CW said, “It was such a hard decision.” He added,

Everyone came to the point where we decided it was just time to move on. But I think everybody is walking away with good feelings. We all tried to make it work.
Gilmore Girlsended with a season finale that was not exactly what the OG creators had in mind. The storyline wrapped up with Lorelai and Luke being back on track after her short-lived marriage to Christopher. On the other hand, Rory graduated from Yale and focused on her dream job while sacrificing her relationship with her boyfriend Logan after rejecting his proposal.
Gilmore Girlswas renewed for a Netflix miniseries
Almost a decade from the season finale of the main show, Netflix revivedGilmore Girlsfor a miniseries titledGilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. This happened after Warner Bros. TV and CW decided not to return with another season. However, this miniseries explored the lives of the beloved characters. The OG creative Palladino duo got their redemption as they finally wrote the “ending” for the show.
Lauren Graham andAlexis Bledelreprised their roles as Lorelai and Rory, and the fans were overjoyed to watch their favorite characters once again in a familiar way. However, the storyline might seem a bit off than how it ended back in 2007 in the last season ofGilmore Girls.
Amy Palladino even admitted she never watched the original ending. So, in the new series, she concocted a plot that fit into her storytelling as she planned previously.
