The Last of Uswas a worldwide phenomenon in the gaming industry and it was successfully translated into a live-action series which also received a similar treatment. Adapting games to a different format is no easy feat but the showrunners have a good idea of how to make it work.

Co-creator Craig Mazin is a huge fan of the original games made by Naughty Dog and ensured the live-action HBO series would honor the source material by collaborating with the original game creators. Mazin is a fan first and must capture the essence of the game without straying too far.
HBO’s The Last of Us Is Successful Because It Was Faithful
Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann are from different backgrounds and areas of expertise and have come together and lifted the curse. In arecent interview, Mazin was adamant that his version of the beloved game be faithful and not follow the same path asGame of Thrones, another successful HBO series where the showrunners bit more than they could chew.
“As a fan, I’m thrilled that there might be a third Last of Us game. As the co-creator of this television show, there’s no world where I would want our show to go beyond the source material that people have in the world. Our show as people know it on HBO is going to cover the material from the second game and then quite a bit of material that is relevant to that story but, as I said, wanders down interesting new paths, unseen stories that were told within the context of that game’s material.”

Naughty Dog recently celebratedthe fourth anniversary ofThe Last of Us Part 2and Druckmann gave the fans a glimmer of hope that a third game may be coming. Mazin has enough material to work with and could potentiallystretch the narrative ofPart 2into multiple seasons.

Perhaps the steady downfall of arguably the most popular television series of all time struck a nerve with HBO and Mazin who decided it is best not to deviate too far and only make compromises where they can. The first season’s success is evident that the adaptation is in good hands.
The Last of Us Being Adapted Into a Series Is the Best Route
Despite being adapted for a different audience, the showrunners must recognize how much the gaming community values these characters. The live-action series was never meant to be a perfect reimagining and Mazin had to cut corners and make changes to make it flow better.
The Last of Us 2 is Finally Getting the Love it Deserves, But Not in the Way You’d Expect
The game had a strong focus on gameplay and the show was able to highlight vulnerable moments that made the game renowned. Exploring story beats that couldn’t be covered in the game has benefitted them greatly.
Part 2 was a massive game and Druckmann gave Mazin enough to work with for a few more seasons. Perhaps by the time Part 3 is finished, HBO will be ready to adapt. Whilst there is pressure for Mazin to deliver on THAT moment of the franchise, he proved with his work in the first season he won’t shy away from difficult topics or moments in the universe, so it’ll be interesting to see how it goes.
