The Last of UsPart 1is a faithful remakethat carries all the potency ofthe original game’s settingand story while enhancing many of the visuals and performances. It’s no wonder David manages to be even more unsettling than he was when thegame was originally released. The boss fight against David in a burning restaurant is terrifying.
As fierce and capable as Ellie is, she’s left with only a knife to defend herself against a brutal man that wants her dead or broken. With Joel being injured, Ellie has no reason to believe that anyone is on their way to help her. It’s a desperate situation in the middle of winter. While the audience knows that Joel is trying to track Ellie down as fast as he can, Ellie has to survive against her sadistic attacker.

Slow and Steady
Your objective is tostab David three times, and while this is simple on a surface level, David is cunning and quick to punish any mistakes the player makes. While everything about this encounter is meant to get your heart racing, the key to winning this fight ispatience.
The First Stab
David is looking and listening for Ellie, and his ownability to listen is just as powerful as Ellie’s or Joel’s. With plates, glass, and utensils strewn across the floor, it’s important to be as quiet as possible, or David will hear you and come running. If he manages to find you, it’s game over, and you’ll be sent back to the latest checkpoint. The good news is that theautosave does a great job of saving your game after you strike David, so you should never be sent back to the very beginning of the struggle. If David is getting too close, or if you make a sound, throw a brick or glassaway from you to draw his attention. The moment David has his back to you, sneak up and stab him for the first time.
The Second Stab
Now, David will pull out his machete. Make sure that you put some distance between Ellie and David again, giving you a moment to regain your sense of positioning. Look around you for anything that might make noise to attract David. Grab a brick or bottle if possible. You’ll want something to throw off David’s hearing if your sneaking doesn’t go well. This stage of the fight is the same as the first. When David turns his back on you, punish him for it.
The Third Stab
After being struck twice, David will change his tactics. He will occasionallyrun from place to place before hidingand taking cover as well. You’re left with the option of waiting for David to make his way to Ellie, or you can use bottles and bricks to coax him out of hiding.
This is where you have to make the decision between being very patient or somewhat risky and aggressive. Usingbricks and bottles to lure out Davidcomes with the risk of him noticing you. Again, if he finds you, it’s game over. You want to double-check your surroundings and make sure that you aren’t about to create any noise before moving to strike for the final time.

Endure and Survive
Once you’ve succeeded with your third stab, we shift away from Ellie’s perspective to Joel’s. You’ll have to be patient if you want to see Ellie get her vengeance and emotional reunion.
