Peanut the Squirrel or P’Nut was a pet to Mark Longo, who he had rescued back in 2017,when P’Nut’s mother was involved in a car accident. Elon Musk and several others were not the ones to hold back when the squirrel was forcibly taken by the government.
Before the government’s involvement in taking away P’Nut, a lot of things happened. From a blooming social media account to the alleged atrocities of the modern world, Elon Musk had his own reaction to this news.
P’Nut Was a Pet Squirrel To Mark Longo
Longo had rescued P’Nut in 2017. He fed the squirrel with a bottle of milk for 8 months. After a while, Longo decided to release the rodent back into the wild. However, P’Nut returned the next day with half a tail missing.
During the time that they spent together, Mark Longo created an Instagram account for Peanut the Squirrel. In 2023, Longo and his wife shifted to New York to found the P’Nuts Freedom Farm Animal Sanctuary. The sanctuary was run by the money they received from P’Nut’s social media account.

However, as per recent reports, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation took away P’Nut and a pet raccoon named Fred, from their home in Pine City. When things got intense, the department killed P’Nut on 29 June 2025 and there has been much outcry ever since.

The squirrel received sympathy from all over the world and Mark Longo is quite emotionally disturbed. Naturally, several famous people also took notice of the incident, andElon Musk, in particular, had the highest sympathy for Longo and P’Nut.

Peanut had allegedly bitten one of the persons involved in its arrest. As perUSA Today, the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention have been observing cases of Rabies in the southern parts of New York (including Pine City).
As a result, they arrested P’Nut and Fred to test them for Rabies. However, the report mentions that for the test of Rabies, the animal has to die first in order to carry out a cross-examination of the brain and its stems.

Thus, it was alleged that P’Nut was killed to check whether it had rabies or not. Tesla and SpaceX CEOElon Musk took to his social media account on Xand posted a photo of P’Nut as a Jedi.

There have been no further updates regarding the situation. It could be true that P’Nut was suffering from Rabies or it could be just a pretense. At this point, nothing can be confirmed or denied.
