The introduction of grimoires inBlack Cloverwas the earliest scaling of power we witnessed in the series. Every user received a grimoire, which determined their abilities and their scope. Among the many young and aspiring magic knights, the central duo stood out with their special grimoires. Asta got the unfortunate Five-Leaf one, whereas Yuno was blessed with the Four-Leaf Grimoire. Yuno’s grimoire was known to be special and very few characters in the series have or had it in their possession.

For the characters and the bystanders in the series, it’s a stroke of good luck that is destined for exceptional individuals. However, there’s more to what having the Four-Leaf Grimoire means for an individual. It brings forth a dark side of the story that was never fully explored by Yuki Tabata. But looking at the lives of all the individuals who possess it makes one thing clear, good luck isn’t all there is to this supposedly special book of fortune.

Everything About the Four-Leaf Grimoire Explained

The first introduction to the grimoires happened during the first arc in the series. While most characters got their hands on the Three-Leaf Grimoire, the most common one, Yuno was granted the Four-Leaf Grimoire. Believed to be a harbinger of good luck and reserved for those blessed by Mana, there was no better candidate than Yuno.

This concept was probably inspired by the superstition of clovers. Usually, clovers have three leaves, so when a variation with four leaves is spotted by someone, they believe it to be a sign of good luck.

So, Yuno’s grimoire became a testament to his stellar skills. Another character who possessed the same grimoire was Licht. When his flashback was explored in the series, it was revealed that the special grimoire has the power to turn into a Five-Leaf Grimoire, the same as the one possessed by Asta.

Whenever a magic knight with a Four-Leaf Grimoire feels intense negative emotions of loss and despair, their grimoire transforms into a Five-Leaf one. These grimoires are considered unfortunate and the extra leaf represents the devil. A devil can use these grimoires to manifest his true powers. This condition leads to many tragic twists in the manga, which makes one reflect on the dark side of these seemingly simple booklets.

The Tragic Fate that Follows the Four-Leaf Grimoire

All those who have possessed the Four-Leaf Grimoire have had tragic character arcs. For instance, to turn Licht’s grimoire into a Five-Leaf one, Zagred put him through hell. Licht lost everyone he cared for and his negative feelings transcended to a point when his grimoire transformed. It was all that the devil wanted, but it came at the cost of everything that ever mattered to Licht. Fanson Redditpointed out that all the characters in the series who possessed the special grimoire led tragic lives.

That’s not all there is to it. What is believed to be a symbol of good luck makes the user a target of the devils. We experienced through Zagred how ruthless and violent they can be. So, beyond the exterior of good luck, possessing these grimoires guarantees a lifetime of misfortune for the user.Yuki Tabatanever explored this darker aspect of the luck that accompanies this honor. Had Yuno not been one of the main characters in the series, he would probably be in the same position as Licht, or something even worse.

Black Cloveris available to stream on Netflix.
