The First Descendant Studio Considers Online RPG To Be The “Next Generation Of Looter Shooters”

The gaming community is fully aware of the upcoming first-person shooter,The First Descendant, which is on course to become a pioneering title in the genre. During an interview withGame Informer, the head of Magnum Studios - one of Nexon’s Seoul-based studios - and lead producer of The First Descendant, Beomjun Lee, discussed the game’s main elements, the studio’s ambitions with the title and what’s in the pipeline for post-launch content and how that will be structured for release.

Lee framed “the main feature of The First Descendant is the PvE co-op element”, which, on paper, sounds similar to a wealth of games of this ilk. However, Lee continued by revealing the studio’s ambitious scope of what the game could become, saying “It’s an online shooter RPG, and we consider it the next generation of looter shooters.”

This statement has some weight behind it, but it’s an exciting promise for fans of this genre to get behind, especially since it’s been designed for the “next generation” of consoles with crossplay and cross-progression.

The First Descendant takes place in the futuristic city of Albion, where Ajax, Valby, and Bunny are searching for the Ironheart - a device used to close the dimension that allowed an invasion of Vulgus to destroy humanity. The premise is peak science fiction, where both your party of “Descendants” and Karel, the new leader of the Vulgus, are searching for the Ironheart.

Free-to-play games have a habit of making gamers nervous these days, with the taboo of Microtransactions lurking around every corner, but Lee’s team has a plan in place to keep players hooked. The producer said the team will be taking a seasonal approach with battle passes that are expected to contain cosmetics relating to the current season, and gamers will be expected to play through the game to collect them.
