If playing throughThe Dark Pictures: Man of Medanafter its release tomorrow won’t scratch that horror itch, perhaps the next game in the series will do it. The end of that game, which comes fromUntil Dawndeveloper Supermassive Games, contained a teaser forThe Dark Pictures: Little Hope, which will arrive sometime in 2020. Prepare yourself for some small-town horror. There aren’t too many plot details in the less-than-a-minute long trailer, but there is some compelling imagery. I sense some cultish aspects, with a creepy shot of a girl dancing around a fire and holding a creepy doll, as a creepy cover of “Scarborough Fair” plays in the background. To summarize, it’s creepy. This is then followed with a mostly-obscured monster attacking a woman named Angela stuck in a pit; she calls out for Andrew, who appears to be played by English actor Will Poulter. Moviegoers will recognize him from Ari Aster’s daytime horror flickMidsommar, or as fictional game developer Colin Ritman in theBlack Mirrorinteractive filmBandersnatch. Personally, his terrifying role as a racist cop inDetroitstuck out to me the most, but surely everyone knows him as the angry eyebrows dude.Little Hopelooks like it will recall more familiar horror genres and tropes thanMan of Medan, which inhabited the less common “ghost ship” subgenre of horror. My own review forMan of Medancame out just yesterday—while it had compelling co-operative modes, the technical issues and the subpar writing made me question the overall sustainability ofThe Dark Picturesproject, with aplanned eight-game anthologyand one game release roughly every six months. The teaser forLittle Hope(embedded below, courtesy of SlasherThrasher on Twitter) certainly looks promising for fans of traditional horror, and hopefully more up to speed with the popularUntil Dawn. We’ll know for sure sometime in 2020 when The Dark Pictures: Little Hope releases on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
