As Gary Oldman recently revealed during his appearance on one of the most super hit talk shows of all time,The Drew Barrymore Show, he most probably would have gone through a financial crisis at the age of 42 following his divorce from his third wife, Donya Fiorentino, had it not been for two of his best works of all time.

“[With my] middle two [boys], I was a single dad. At 42 years old, I woke up, you know, sort of divorced, and I had custody of these two boys.”

Since he had to take care of his two boys by himself all the while working to earn money, theLéonstar couldn’t take up many roles as the production for the same was being done in different regions at the time, and he couldn’t leave his family and travel, being a single dad.

“So that in itself was hard because there was a shift in the industry where a lot of productions were being [done] in [places like] Hungary, Budapest, Prague, Australia [for tax reasons]—all these places. So I turned down a lot of work.”

But that’s when two of his best-performed films of all time,Harry PotterandThe Dark Knight, came into the picture at his rescue.

“Thank God for Harry Potter. Thank God for Harry Potter. And, I tell you, the two—Batman and Harry Potter—really, they saved me. Because it meant that I could do the least amount of work for the most amount of money, and then be home with the kids!”

Thankfully, with the prominent roles he was offered in theHarry Potterfilms series and Christopher Nolan’sThe Dark Knighttrilogy along with the flexibility he was allowed,Gary Oldmanwas saved from being in a financial crisis where he could both work and be with his kids at the same time.

How Gary Oldman Worked ForThe Dark KnightTrilogy

Although both the super famous film series may have paid him greatly for the minimal work he had to do in both of them, working for them wasn’t easy either as Gary Oldman had to do up-down to work and be with his kids as well. As he continued to share:

“When we did the first Batman, London doubled for Gotham. And I did 27 round trips of flying back from L.A. I’d fly in for a day, I’d do a shoot a day, and I’d say [to Christopher Nolan], ‘Look, I’m in the car, going back to the airport. If there’s anything wrong, then I’ll turn the car around, but you know where I’m going.’ [So] when we wrap, I’m in the car to the airport.”

Giving most of the credit to filmmakerChristopher Nolan, theDarkest Hourstar continued to explain his hectic schedule throughout the timeBatman Beginswas in the works.

“And to [Christopher Nolan’s] credit, he stayed on schedule. And I would go home for three days, [and] come back for two. Go home for a weekend, come back for one day. Go home for a week, [and] come back for four days. Otherwise, I felt [my kids were] just being brought up by [a] nanny.”

Irrespective of how he might have felt, Gary Oldman undoubtedly did a terrific job at raising his kids all the while working to earn for them at the same time, considering how hemade sureto come back home even in such a tightly knit schedule. Not everyone can do that!
