When Taylor Sheridan introduced the neo-Western realm ofYellowstone, the world was not yet ready for what was about to hit them. Then came the politics, the dysfunctional brood of fully-grown offspring, a fast-dwindling way of life defined by generational land and outstanding wealth, and the fans quickly spiraled into an addictive binge-watching session from the get-go.

A still from Taylor Sheridan’s neo-Western series, Yellowstone.

Yellowstonenever promised more than what it could deliver. The potential of Sheridan’s series was beyond imagination and the series creator crafted his world of morally and ethically ambiguous characters and their respective intertwining storylines into a perfect symphony of chaos and degradation. The protagonist: Kevin Costner’s John Dutton sat at the center of it all.

Kevin Costner’s Morally Grey Arc inYellowstone

AfterTaylor Sheridantransitioned from a struggling actor into one of the most talented, globally famous, A-list, Oscar-nominated scriptwriters in Hollywood, he dreamed of working with one iconic personality whose face was synonymous with that of Westerns:Kevin Costner.Yellowstonegranted him that opportunity.

However, to mold the actor into a tool of perfectionism, the story needed to compliment him equally well.Yellowstoneshamelessly and unapologetically operated in shades of grey and Costner loved the idea of playing the arc, flaws and all.

According to theYellowstonepatriarch,“There’s a phase in my career where I will be playing characters that either have a collective wisdom or made so many mistakes — collective f—ups,”and this perfectly sums up John Dutton. Thrust into a seventh-generation family-owned cattle and ranch business, Papa Dutton was forced to operate in shades of grey in a rapidly changing world.

As far as Taylor Sheridan was concerned, his protagonist was the product of a consumeristic, capitalist culture that thrived on profits and conquests. Losing was not an option and all the players on the chessboard were ready to lose an arm and a leg if it meant they could buy a chunk of the land that the Duttons sat on.

Taylor Sheridan Puts Costner in a Conflicting Role

In his 43-year career in film and television, Kevin Costner has made the genre of Westerns into something of a personal achievement.Yellowstoneonly reminded the world of his domain afterWyatt Earpdethroned him from his rightful place in the industry. Costner, in turn, pushed the Paramount+ series into the echelon of modern-day classics.

While writing Kevin Costner’s role forYellowstone, Sheridan had a certain mentality while crafting the character’s storyline – specifically because it was Costner playing the arc. In an interview withVariety, Sheridan revealed:

Kevin’s one of the biggest movie stars of the past 40 years, and well deserved. He’s an incredible storyteller as a director, as a writer, as an actor, and so when you have that that kind of tool in your toolbox, you can write him into some really conflicting situations.

Deservedly, Costner reigned over each season ofYellowstonewith an iron-fisted apathy – as a father, a mentor, a politician, a businessman, and a leader. Despite the varying degrees of challenges and hoops that he had to jump through, John Dutton was an unshakeable tour de force of power and wealth.

Yellowstonestood strong because Kevin Costner made it so. With the collective addition of brilliant acting by Kelly Reilly, Wes Bentley, Gil Birmingham, Luke Grimes, Cole Hauser, and Jefferson White, the series offered some of the best drama that television had seen in years – decades even if one takes the genre into account.
