Tales of Ariseproducer Yusuke Tomizawa stated the upcoming JRPG will have its streaming guidelines published soon, content creators and streamers will be able to stream the game fine.
Restrictive steaming guidelines is a typical thing when it comes to Japanese games. This became a well-known issue outside Japan in 2017 with the streaming guidelines published by Atlus whenPersona 5released in the west, and withPersona 5 Royala few years later.
Japanese games' streaming guidelines, explained
Streaming guidelines from Japanese companies can usually be divided into two categories. The first case is when fans are asked to refrain from streaming the game or sharing videos. Sometimes until a certain date after release. This often happens with ADV games (often mixed up with visual novels outside Japan) and games with a huge story focus.
A recent example would beTsukihime Remake A Piece of Blue Glass Moon. Type-Moon asked players to avoid streaming the game or making videos. Type-Moon also asked fans toavoid publicly sharing spoilersfor two weeks after release. From August 26 to September 8.
Personally, I believe this is the result of some companies not seeing the marketing potential of streaming. They believe Let’s Plays will only hurt their business, instead of promoting the game. There’s also how Japanese companies tend to wish to control everything about their product. If I was a Caucasian man high on a very popular drug called Orientalism, I’d say this is due to the Japanese-exclusive philosophical concepts of Zen and Stillness, with Japanese companies unused to change. Jokes asides, more and more companies are actually changing, publishing guidelines allowing Japanese streamers on sites such as Mildom to stream and monetize their content.Square Enix recently did that withDragon Questfor example.
Anyways, that’s the first category most Japanese games' streaming guidelines fall in. The second category is when streaming the game is fully allowed, as long as spoilers are properly tagged. This is probably what Bandai Namco will do withTales of Arise.
Tales of Arisestreaming guidelines will actually allow you to stream the game
