Brian Cox gave a Golden Globe-winning performance as Logan Roy in the TV show,Succession. Cox based the patriarch of the dysfunctional Roy family on the likes of Rupert Murdoch, the American business magnate and investor. The similarities were uncanny as Logan in the series was the founder of the media and entertainment conglomerate Waystar RoyCo.

When asked about his character’s relationship with women, Cox shared that he believed Logan, like Murdoch, is not averse to having an affair on the show. However, he clarified that Logan didn’t need extramarital relationships to keep his storyline going inSeason 2.

Was Brian Cox inspired by Rupert Murdoch to create his character’s affair storyline inSuccession?

By the end ofSuccession Season 2,Marcia leaves Logan Royafter she accuses him of having an affair with Rhea Jarrell. According toBrian Cox, the affair was just a figment of imagination that Logan’s kids came up with. Marcia confronts Rhea about the affair and she even denies it. However, Marcia comes to the wrong conclusion and leaves.

Cox shared that Logan and Rhea’s relationship was purely professional and there was no other intention behind him naming her as the CEO of Waystar RoyCo. However, that doesn’t mean that he is above having an affair. When asked if Logan might use sex as a tool to get what he wanted, Cox replied toAwardsDaily:

They say success is the greatest aphrodisiac. He might be the beneficiary of that. I don’t think it’s something he pursues. I’ve thought about this long. I just don’t think he does.

He shared that while Logan wouldn’t possibly complicate things with an affair, he isn’t averse to the idea either. Cox shared Rupert Murdoch’s example when talking about old men in business and their alleged affairs. He shared:

He’s a man of a certain age. We’ve seen in recent times the fact that Murdoch ended up with Jerry Hall and he had a relationship with Wendi [Deng Murdoch]—you could see, oh yes, that goes on. I don’t think Logan’s averse to that.

When specifically asked about a possible romantic relationship between Rhea and Logan, Cox replied,“It could get that way, late nights and all that stuff, but it is a professional relationship. Holly and I quickly agreed on that, and I think everybody agreed on that.”He did admit to one affair of Logan though. He shared that Logan and his general counsel Gerri Kellman could’ve had a“very brief affair”at one point.

Brian Cox believed that Logan Roy was very misunderstood on the whole Rhea affair

Brian Cox opened up about his character’s relationship with his third wife Marcia. Cox shared that Marcia was a constant in Logan’s life even through his illness. She was an incredibly reliable character until Rhea entered the picture. Cox believed that Marcia needlessly complicated things as she couldn’t see the business relationship but only an affair.

Cox shared during the interview,“He misses Marcia because he misses Marcia’s reliability and obviously because he does love Marcia in a way.”However, Cox shared that Logan is not bothered by all the affair nonsense and hence doesn’t feel the need to clear things up. According to Cox, Logan“does feel very misunderstood on the whole thing.”
