Starfield: Shattered Spacehas loads of interesting activities to complete. Sometimes, these include complicated decisions. Notably, some of these choices are tough without knowing the consequences. If you get stuck while choosing between whether to remove the Vortex Interlock or not, that’s completely understandable.
Decision-making is often an integral part of progressing through the game’s main story, and this is kind of the same with theStarfieldDLC. Throughout the game, players need to make several decisions, and while a few of them don’t impact the gameplay, others are required to prove their loyalty to House Va’ruun. So, making random decisions is sometimes dangerous.

Importantly, most of these decisions come at the end of some main story missions, including the vortex interlock one. Exhuming The Past is the mission that will eventually take you to the point where you have to choose between removing the last vortex lock or not.
How to Begin and Proceed Through Exhuming the Past Mission in Shattered Space
MostShattered Spacemissions are straightforward, and Exhuming the Past is not an exception. To begin this mission, start traveling toward the southeast of Dazra until you reach the Ma’Leen Dam. This is where your quest will officially begin. The ID card reader will block your access to the dam, and you need to look for an ID card to scan there.
At this point, you will meet a child who will tell you about an NPC living in the nearby village, and he has an ID card. So, your next task is to locate him andpersuade him to give you his card. After this task is done, the way to go inside the dam is clear, and fortunately, inside the area, there are not many enemies.

The remaining part is easy. The quest marker will guide you through the way and take you to the power puzzle of the Sub Pump Control computer. Once you solve this puzzle, you will meet Karija Ma’leen. After some interaction, Karija will attack you, and the fight begins.
We recommend using ranged weapons for this fight as the enemy has a lot of health. Melee players can also take her down, but that will be a lengthy process, especially considering she is not going to die in the fight.

Once this fight is done, progress forward to the next room, and there you need to figure out the exact code to complete the teleportation experiment. The code is pretty tricky to understand, and if you are still looking for it, put 335 to proceed to the next room and meet Karija once again.
In this process, you will get the First Vortex Interlock, and eventually, you will progress toward getting the second one. Once the second Vortex Interlock becomes accessible, you will be given two options: leave the dam or remove the final Vortex Interlock.

Where to Find the Final Vortex Interlock?
Before making any decision, let’s check the location of the final Vortex Interlock. Once you reach the location where you get this choice, turn left, and you will see a locked door with an access panel. Interact with the access panel to unlock the door and enter the next section.

This next room has a power module on a wall far back, and before you reach it, you have to take down three Vortex Phantoms. Now, as the path is clear, get to the power module and destroy it. Doing this will make the Last Vortex Interlock removable.
At this point, you have to decide whether you will remove the last Vortex Interlock or leave the dam without removing it.

Answering the Question: Should You Remove the Last Vortex Interlock or Leave the Dam
The game has multiple activities to complete, includingrecruiting various teammates during your progressionor completing missions. However, decision-making is the toughest one, as most of it comes with positive and negative consequences.
Though removing the Vortex Interlock or not doesn’t change the quest rewards, it will impact the gameplay to some extent. So, before you make the decision, check out the consequences of each option.
What Will Happen if You Remove the Last Vortex Interlock?
If you choose to remove the last Vortex Interlock, you will bring it to Ekris and hand him over two of these items for an Exterminator Modified Va’ruun Penumbra and 12000 Credits. Aside from that, killing Karija in this process will allow you to pick up her Titanium Va’ruun Penumbra. Additionally, it is an important part of the final quest of the expansion.

Anyways, all these things come at the cost of loads of lives. As soon as you remove the final Vortex Interlock, the livelihood of the nearby village will be destroyed. This choice will provide you with an additional quest named Visit the villagers. During it, you will witness how your decision has ruined the ecosystem of their seaweed farm and made them all suffer.
Of course, this won’t be called a good decision at all. In that case, you should consider the second option.
What Will Happen if You Leave the Farm Without Taking the Second Vortex Interlock?
Now if you want to be a little sensible and don’t want to be the cause of the villagers’ suffering, you may leave the dam with only one Vortex Interlock. The way of exit will be tough as Vortex enemies will keep spawning and you have to go back the entire way you have crossed to reach the dam.
Anyway, in this case, as well, you will give it to Ekris, but this time he won’t reward you with anything. That’s a loss for sure, but it will keep the ecosystem and the villagers safe, along with not causing any harm to you besides missing some rewards.
Therefore, this is probably the best option you should go for, although you’re able to choose anything that you prefer to experience.
