The first two episodes of the long-anticipated action seriesStar Wars: Skeleton Crewhave finally made their way to fans’ screens, and the reviews are nothing short of sweet. So far, both general audiences and critics are mostly approving this latest addition to George Lucas’ iconic space opera, which surrounds a group of lost kids in the New Republic era.

Besides the storyline and the outstanding acting from the entire cast, what’s catching fans’ attention all the more are the themes that the showrunners have incorporated into their saga. The surprising part? The inspirations for the same seem to have been taken from one of Lucas’ most controversial moves for the prequel trilogy, and yet, it’s making this show look 1000x better.
Skeleton CrewSeems to Have Taken Inspiration From the Prequel Trilogy
For the most part,Star Wars: Skeleton Crewdoesn’t seem to have disappointed fans so far. From its storyline to its characters to the actors embodying them and giving an immaculate performance to the very aesthetic themes of the lore, the saga is perfectly catching all the attention it needs as an entertaining eye candy. That said, it has taken inspiration from the prequel trilogy as well.
In the said trilogy,George Lucasinfused some really different elements as compared to the original trilogy, which notably came out more than a decade before it. Instead of recreating that worn-down, lived-in feel, the creator took a different approach as he made the prequel trilogy far more regal and shiny than the original one, sporting different and more complex settings and ships.

To say the least, the Prequels offered a different aesthetic with sleeker designs, colors, and, in general, a more modernized look. For instance, one of the most evident modifications was done on the city-covered planet Coruscant, which included Lucas bringing about Dex’s Diner inEpisode II – Attack of the Clones– his version of an old-school diner from the real world.

Skeleton Crew, on the other hand, perfectly brings about something similar through the planet At Attin, ostensibly inspired by Lucas’ ideas, trying to get it in line with Dex’s Diner from the prequels. Then there’s all the droids and the universe’s technology that the series sports, successfully creating new settings while remaining consistent with the aesthetics set by the prequel trilogy.
George Lucas’ Originally Controversial Ideas Seem to Be Working forSkeleton Crew
As much as these ideas seem to be shining in this latest addition to theStar Warsfranchise, they weren’t welcomed with so much as open arms back in time when they were originally introduced to fans in the prequel trilogy. If anything, coming off the craze of the original trilogy, many fans found this modernized change in aesthetics to be a bit artificial, too sterile, and abstract.
This is because, in the original film series that kickstarted Lucas’ space opera in the first place, the themes were a lot different. Not only did those films provide a more minimalistic and colorless aesthetic, but they were also made to make the universe more practical and relatable with arun-downandlived-ingalaxy, even making the technology seem more worn out.

That said, jumping ships so unexpectedly with the prequels, which notably take place in the same galaxy as the originals, made the change in aesthetics seem more or less artificial to fans. This, in turn, earned the mastermind behind the saga quite a bit of controversy from fans worldwide as they found it hard to adapt to the sudden contemporary change in the themes (seeReddit).

However, now that it is all being ostensibly brought back into the franchise as this latest series reflects aesthetics similar to the prequels, things seem to be finally working in the creators’ favor. This is because, with the aesthetics further adding stars to the show, the series is currently raging with a sparkling 95% critical and 86% general approval from audiences worldwide (seeRT).
