With so many players jumping intoStalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl, people are bound to find issues. Quality Assurance departments put in hundreds of hours to find every issue they can, but nothing compares to thousands of fans all playing at once. QA can only do so much.

And yet, some issues just leave people scratching their head.

Those who chose to playStalker 2on a controller may have run into a slight issue:their right thumbstick just doesn’t work right.

Some describe it aserratic movement, with the character’s vision whipping around all over the place, with even the slightest input.

As of now, there are two suspects in this case. Together, they may explain why the game doesn’t play nice with controllers. First: stick drift. Second: the lack of proper “deadzone” settings.

Stick drift is something that happens to controllers as they age. Some more than others.

After some wear and tear, controllers may sometimes read ‘no input’ as a slight movement in a particular direction, causing movement to slowly “drift” that way when playing a game. The stick’s movement drifts, hence the name.

The deadzone issue is a bit more technical, but also easier to simplify. In short, most games have an anti-stick-drift feature that diminishes the strength of weak inputs. Perhaps erasing them entirely, if the player desires.

With a deadzone applied, you’d move the stick a little bit, and barely get any movement in-game. But if you slam the stick to the side, you get all the movement you need. Most games make a setting out of this, so you can pick how sensitive your movement is.

Without a deadzone, there is little difference between slight movement (like the movement generated by stick drift), and the strongest possible movement that the game can generate. It’s easy to put two and two together here - these problems amplify each other in the worst way.

Stalker 2 Devs Respond To Game Issues

The developers of Stalker 2 have released a statement adressing the various problems people have had with their game so far. It doesn’t address this controller issue by name (as there are several other bugs with the project at the moment), but it does promise to improve things promptly.

Considering the…slightly more immediate problemsfacing a Ukrainian development studio, things like a buggy release seem like a fairly forgivable problem to have. GSC Game World clearly wants to push out hotfixes as soon as they’re able, and players seem receptive to the idea.

There’s not currently a timeline on when those fixes will greet players face-to-face, but general sentiment seems to be “as soon as possible”.
