Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been heating up nicely since the arrival ofWandaVisionandBlack Widow, but the future of the MCU is now hotter than Hell’s Kitchen.
TheSpider-Man: No Way Hometrailer has quite possibly become one of the most talked-about trailers in existence, and certainly the most-viewed in history. Not only has it fueled the rumor of past Spider-Men making an appearance, but it has also produced a number of other theories too. It’s time to let Mephisto and Matt Murdock breathe for a moment because we want to talk about Mysterio.
Mysterio Theory
Jake Gyllenhaal’s Quentin Beck, a.k.a. Mysterio, was first introduced into the MCU inSpider-Man: Far From Home, revealed to be a master manipulator. Mysterio is the reason why Peter Parker’s identity has been revealed inNo Way Home, after the second film’s shocking reveal. The villain apparently died at the end ofFar From Home, after entangling Peter in a web of cutting-edge, virtual reality technology, and this theory suggests that the events ofNo Way Homeis in fact all part of Beck’s plan.
Doctor Strange’s behavior in theNo Way Hometrailer has been reported as odd, according to fans, who claim the sorcerer would never be so eager to perform such a high-risk spell. Mysterio’s identity reveal at the end ofFar From Homecould have been part of the villain’s plan to drive Peter to seek out the help of Doctor Strange to reverse it, in order for Spidey to become caught in a more elaborate web of engineered villains, who we know from past films.
OtherNo Way HomeTheories
It’s rather difficult to find a place to start when faced with the tidal wave of theories spilling out from theNo Way Hometrailer. While we managed to redirect a portion of this Marvel tsunami to give Mysterio the spotlight, there are still plenty of other characters who may have a hand in makingNo Way HomeMarvel’s most daring feature to date.
Without stating the fan-favorite Mephisto theory, there are two other significant appearances rumored forNo Way Home. The first isCharlie Cox’s revival as Matt Murdock, who is thought to have a cameo in the film as Peter’s lawyer. The trailer briefly showed a white-shirted man slamming a heavy case file down on the table in front of an arrested Peter, and fans have matched the arm hair, rolled up sleeves, and shadow profile to the Hell’s Kitchen vigilante.
The other theory isNed’s transformation into the popular comic book villain Hobgoblin, made possible by the opening of the Multiverse. After Doctor Strange’s tampering with current events, fans have speculated that as villains from other timelines pour out, the opening of different dimensions may also offer a variant of Ned who has become a puppet of Norman Osborn’s Green Goblin.
