The American psychological horror movie,Speak No Evil, had all the necessary dark elements to make it stand out from the crowd. It featured James McAvoy in the titular role and was a remake of the 2022 Danish movie of the same name. The buzz for the movie was quite huge before its release.

As soon as the fans watched the movie, they were quick to point out major plot differences between the original and the remake.
The Difference Between the Ending of Speak No Evil Original and the Remake
While the basic premise of both the movies is the same, the main difference comes from their different endings. In the remake, Ant gestures to Agnes that his tongue was cut by Paddy (James McAvoy) and Ciara (Aisling Franciosi). She tells the same truth to her parents, explaining how Ant wasn’t mute since birth, but rather due to Paddy and Ciara’s deliberate attempt to keep his mouth shut.
After hearing this, Louise and Ben Dalton make an excuse that Agnes has her first period, so they’d have to leave. However, as they are leaving, Paddy throws Ant into the lake, knowing that he doesn’t know how to swim.

The Daltons rush to save the kid but are later captured by Paddy and Ciara. But to Paddy’s surprise, Louise hadhiddena box cutter and used it to cut his face, giving the family enough time to escape.
But as soon as they’re about to leave, Chef Mike blocks their way. Following this, the Daltons retreat into the house, leading to a tense and scary home invasion. However, one by one, the villains are defeated. Chef Mike is dead after taking a brutal blow to his head, Ciara falls from the roof, and the main antagonist Paddy is tranquilized and stoned to death by Ant.

While the Daltons are traumatized, they are happy to be alive, with Agnes even giving her stuffed toy to Ant.
The remake had a sort of happy ending with the family still being alive, unlike the horror that took place in the original. Here, even after discovering Patrick’s reality, Bjørn still decides to get into his car. In a heartbreaking twist, Agnes is ripped apart from her parents, who then witness her tongue being cut off in front of their eyes.

After this, Bjørn and Louise are stripped naked, and the captors Patrick and Karin stone them to death. Further, the movie ends with Patrick and Karin riding off with Agnes in the back seat, marking that the duo will continue their gruesome cycle.
We Don’t Deserve James McAvoy: He “went face-first down from the tallest hospital in the world” for the Most Honorable Cause
This was the major aspect where the fans felt that the 2024 remake went a bit softer compared to the harrowing sequences that took place in the original. Now, the director of the remake, James Watkins, has explained why both flicks have such a different ending.
James Watkins Revealed Why He Chose a Different Ending for James McAvoy’sSpeak No Evil
The Danish version ofSpeak No Evilgained huge acclaim when released in 2022. It showcased what a dark and gripping horror movie should be like. So, when Blumhouse announced a remake of the same, fans of the movie were quite excited. But as soon as fans witnessed the movie, they pointed out how its ending strayed from the original.
Now, director James Watkins added on the same subject and revealed his reasoning for the same in an interview withSlash Film. On the movie’s different ending, he added:

I definitely wanted to go somewhere different in the third act. Because for me, once the cat’s out of the bag … the point where Paddy says, ‘Because you let us,’ [that’s a] theme of the movie. (Further talking about the character’s he said) In my mind, particularly with these American characters, I felt that once it was all out there and it’s no longer about politeness — when you’re confronted with a gun — I felt these characters, Ben and Louise, they’ve got to at least attempt to do something.
The director perfectly captured the essence, where despite witnessing several red flags from Paddy, Louise, just out of politeness, kept her mouth shut. In another interview withSYFY WIRE, the director had given reasons as to why he changed the ending of the McAvoy starrer. The first was that he hadalreadymade 2008’sEden Lakewith a similar gruesome ending. And second, how the American characters would react to violence and danger.
