Out with the old, in with the new. That’s how the saying usually goes but for Sony, it seems that the old should have been the new and Sony shouldn’t have deviated too much from Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s versions.

Although every movie had some minor (and some major) flaws, the overall recognition and love for Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s performances was far greater than the rest of the recent Sony movies. Now, the CEO of Sony is calling theSpider-Manfranchise“Snake-bitten.”
Is theSpider-Manfranchise doomed?
Well… we wouldn’t go so far as to call it“doomed”. But the CEO of Sony will! Although he hasn’t said the words directly, Tony Vinciquerra’s words were enough to haunt all the fans of Tobey Maguire andAndrew Garfield.
It was the year 2002 when veteran director Sam Raimi and veteran star Tobey Maguire released one of the most iconic superhero movies of all time:Spider-Man.Ever since then, the world has been in love with the character.

The films kicked off a franchise starringTobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland portraying the role of Peter Parker. However, with the recent failures of Sony’s other films likeMorbiusandKraven the Hunter,Sony CEO Tony Vinciquerra referred to the entirety of the franchise as“Snake-bitten”(viaThe LA Times).
I do think we need to rethink it, just because it’s snake-bitten. If we put another one out, it’s going to get destroyed, no matter how good or bad it is.

2024 wasn’t the best year for Sony as films likeMadame Web, Venom: The Last Dance, andKraven the Hunterunderperformed at the box office quite terribly.

However, for Vinciquerra, it was not the exact case. According to the Sony CEO, the movies were actually good as he claimed that critics just decided to rip the movies apart without any particular reason for it.
What Tony Vinciquerra had to say about Sony’s movies
Well, everyone is entitled to their own opinions but for a majority of the people, Sony’s recent flick wasn’t the best of the best. The movies received mixed reviews and worse things from fans and critics alike.
Well, as the interview of Tony Vinciquerra continued with The LA Times, the chairperson further revealed thatMadame Web, Kraven the Hunter, andVenom: The Last Dancewere mercilessly ripped apart by critics for no reason.

‘Madame Web’ underperformed in the theaters because the press just crucified it. It was not a bad film, and it did great on Netflix. For some reason, the press decided that they didn’t want us making these films out of ‘Kraven’ and ‘Madame Web,’ and the critics just destroyed them.
He further continued,

They also did it with ‘Venom,’ but the audience loved ‘Venom’ and made ‘Venom’ a massive hit. These are not terrible films. They were just destroyed by the critics in the press, for some reason.
As we said, everyone’s entitled to their opinions. However, there is also the matter of facts and ratings and people cannot be wrong in both. Sony’s latest flick didn’t do so well with fans nor with critics.
