It’s a big year for fans of Shadow the Hedgehog, as we’ll be seeing Sonic’s arch-rival in the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie, and also Shadow Generations, a brand-new campaign within theSonic Generationsremaster.

Shadow Generations is seen by Sonic Team as an opportunity to explore the history and legacy of Shadow the Hedgehog, in a similar manner to what the original Sonic Generations did for the franchise’s eponymous hedgehog.

In an interview withGame Rant, Sonic Team leader Takashi Iizuka spoke about Shadow’s legacy, and how Shadow Generations came into existence.

Whether Sonic Heroes Is Actually Getting a Remake or Not, It Deserves One

Set the stage for a hero’s parade.

“It’s a playable history and legacy that they get to recreate for themselves and reintroduce to people,” Iizuka began. “That was the fun of Sonic Generations, you know? That’s where the benefit of having Shadow Generations comes in as well. We get to do the same thing, but for Shadow.”

Shadow the Hedgehog first appeared in Sonic Adventure 2. He was actually originally conceived by Iizuka, himself. After his untimely demise in that game, Shadow became a fan-favourite, pushing Sega to include the ‘Anti Sonic’ in future games.

“We get to tell his story,” Iizuka said. “Fans are going to love it because they’re going to be like ‘Yes. This is everything I love about the character,’ but first-time players are going to get to walk through all of his history and legacy, so they’ll walk away understanding Shadow as well.”

Shadow Generations is going to have more cutscenes that delve deeper into Shadow as a character, as opposed to just being a barrage of stages. Sonic Team has leaned heavily into narrative elements.

“This year is the Year of Shadow,” Iizuka affirms. “Up until now, I know we’ve had lots of Shadow fans that really, really want more of him, specifically, but we haven’t been able to provide as much content for Shadow as they wanted. This is the year where Shadow’s getting the spotlight…”

Sonic X Shadow Generations will be released for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC on October 25.
