In January 2021,Varietyreported rumors about a pitch for aGoTprequel series based onGeorge R. R. Martin‘s short stories,Tales of Dunk and Egg.Deadlinereported in November 2021 that the series was in development, with Martin later confirming it onhis blogin 2022. The series was greenlit during WBD’s upfront presentation on August 04, 2025. HBO head of drama, Francesca Orsi, confirmed that the series would run for three seasons, mapping out the three novellas Martin wrote (via Deadline).

Fans are totally against this prequel season for a number of reasons. For one, they are still pissed about the horrible eighth season ofGame of Thrones. They are also against the idea of another prequel series before the wrapping ofHouse of the Dragon. A few criticized the studio for trying to milk money out of the Westeros stories. Some fans also complained about how the original series could have been developed more instead of producing more spinoffs. Several fan reactions read:

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight

A spin off would be a bad decision and should not be done.

Why do we need another spin-off. Must studios milk everything for money?

Still havent forgiven HBO for that awful ending for the original series.

Instead of a second spin off, they could have kept it going.

What Is The UpcomingGame Of ThronesSpin-Off About?

The new series,The Hedge Knight, will be focused on two primary characters — Duncan the Tall, a young hedge knight, and Aegon “Egg” Targaryen, Duncan’s squire. The story is set 89 years before the events of the original series and almost 77 years after the events of season one ofHouse of the Dragon. According toVariety, the official logline of the series reads:

“A century before the events of ‘Game of Thrones,’ two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros… a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.”

Interestingly, Martin confirmed that he was in talks with HBO for a possible adaptation ofTales of Dunk and Eggas far back as 2013 when the original series was running successfully (via Westeros.org). In 2016, he pitched the idea to the studio but was rejected. It appears that the author has been confident about his work for a long.
