After the monumental success ofKaguya Sama, Aka Akasaka’sOshi no Koalso garnered immense popularity. While the former is still loved by fans, it can be said thatOshi no Kohas fallen off. The positive reception at the beginning of the story has not aged well, with more and more fans disliking the recent developments. Part of the reason why that ended up happening is Ai Hoshino.

By creating a captivating character like her, Akasaka set an unreasonably high standard for himself and failed to live up to it. He also had different plans for the character that had to be changed. All these factors resulted in the popularity of the anime-manga series taking a severe hit.

Fans Understandably Wanted More of Ai inOshi no Ko

The premiere ofOshi no Kowas among the most hyped events of 2023 in the anime-manga community. Fans weren’t prepared for the dark surprise that awaited them at the end. The shock value from Ai’s death led to a great hike in the anime’s popularity, but now it’s proving to be a bad creative decision. Ai Hoshino was a compelling character. Her presence and popularity inside the manga and outside of it are not much different, she’s universally loved.

As a character, Ai Hoshino deserves every bit of the love she gets from everyone. Living through a tragic past and making strong choices were great additions beyond the liar persona. Moreover, her charm is unparalleled. Her death was a huge shock after howOshi no Kowas advertised. Ai was basically everywhere from the poster to the opening sequence, the entire idea of the series was spun around her character.

What was promised to the audience wasn’t delivered as Ai was killed off. Her sudden death made fans question what’s next and kept them hooked to the story. However, as the story has progressed, fans understandably want to see more of her.

While there are some great characters in the series, none of them are as intriguing as Ai. The plot progression also feels dragged and scattered as the focus constantly shifts between the different characters. Fans wanting to see more of Ai is exactly what Aka Akasaka also feared with the character. So much so that he ended up switching things around.

Ai Was Too Overpowered to Stay Alive

According to the original plan, Ai wasn’t supposed to be killed, as the mangaka shared inan interview. But Aka Akasaka felt that her strong presence would overshadow the other characters and decided to kill her. This decision initially helped the popularity of the series, but now fans want Ai back. While that’s not possible, the recent arc in the manga delved into her story.

If it was just her strong presence that threatened the other characters’ then Akasaka could have used it as a challenge to diversify and enrich the other characters with interesting traits. Among the current characters, Kana Arima definitely has a strong presence. It was evident in the second season of the anime as well. She has her own interests and personality beyond her association with the twins.

A similar approach could have been followed with the main characters. Aqua’s obsession with Ai doesn’t allow him to have a life outside of it, but Akasaka could have found ways to bring the other characters on a level that’s comparable to Ai. What proved to be a great decision in the beginning is now bringing down the manga, just another instance of Ai’s influence and impact.
