Gol D. Roger is one of the most powerful and legendary figures inOne Piece. He was the former Pirate King, the captain of the Roger Pirates, and owned the mysterious treasure named after the anime, One Piece. He knew the truth about the Void Century, the Ancient Weapons, and the mystery behind the Will of D.

As a D carrier himself and the conqueror of the Grand Line, the World Government executed the powerful man but his last words, the opening words to everyOne Pieceepisode, only encouraged and started the Golden Age of Pirates. So how did this legend get defeated by a mere illness?

In addition to being the Pirate King, Gol D. Roger was a very kind man. He was the biological father of Portgas D. Ace and although he never knew him, he only wanted the best for his son. Before Ace, he mentored Shanks and Buggy, two of the current Emperors of the Sea. He held a fatherly relationship with them in their childhood. However, many theories revolve around Shanks’ true nature.

One such theory is that Shanks poisoned the Pirate King. Why does this theory exist, especially when Shanks holds immense respect for his former mentor?

Would Shanks Actually Poison Gol D. Roger?

The dynamic between young Shanks and Gol D. Roger was incredibly close. The Pirate King knew the Red-Haired Pirate since he was a baby and gave him his straw hat at the age of 8. Shanks was even shown to be devastated at his execution and still holds fond memories of the man. He often also remarks how Luffy and Ace are a lot like the Pirate King, in different ways. So, why have fans theorized that Shanks would poison his father figure?

Before his execution, Gol D. Roger fell sick from an unnamed illness that caused him to spit blood and slowly die. Crocus, the Roger Pirates’ doctor, couldn’t cure the illness either. That’s partly why Roger didn’t have many regrets when dying.

So, then why do fans Roger’s illness was actually poison? In a recent chapter,Shanks tested Bartolomeo’s loyalty towards Luffyby giving him a (fake) poison, claiming it would make him bleed out and soon die. Considering the death from that poison sounds instantaneous, it’s doubtful Shanks poisoned Gol D. Roger, who was dying rather slowly.

Accidental Poisoning or Intentional?

Some fans who don’t entirely believe the theory but gave it some thought brought up the fact that Chopper, in his past, had also accidentally poisoned his mentor and father figure, Dr Hiriluk, who never felt any resentment towards him. So, if Shanks did indeed poison Roger, it’s more likely he accidentally poisoned him while trying to help cure his illness and accelerated it instead. However, it’s also not convincing thatEiichiro Odawould write the same backstory twice.

If this theory is true, itdoes change his dynamic with Luffyand perhaps Roger forgave Shanks so that he could guide the next Joy Boy, something they could’ve learnt about on Laugh Tale. However, all of this is hypothetical and only Oda can fill the gaps.
