After a three-year-long wait,Severancefinally marked its return to the small screen, and similar to its predecessor, season 2 has started on a high note. However, it seems the production cost of replicating the heights of the previous season has taken a severe toll on Fifth Season’s finances, previously known as Endeavor Content.

If true, this doesn’t come as surprising, as the production for season 2 was quite rocky from the start, given the multiple delays that stemmed from Hollywood strikes and other issues.

SeveranceSeason 2 has reportedly proven to be too severe for Fifth Season studio

From COVID-19 to 2023’s WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, followed by other production-related issues, the development forSeveranceseason 2 was quite tumultuous, to say the least. Moreover, it waspreviously revealedthat Apple TV had spent a reported $20M figure for each episode of season 2, which would make it one of the most expensive TV shows in the market.

Although Apple TV is notable for throwing heavy amounts into artistically-driven projects, which has contributed to its impeccable catalog, per new reports, the ballooning budget has impacted Fifth Season studio’s Profit.

According toPluck’s What I’m Hearing,Severanceseason 2’s production has reportedly wiped out the Fifth Season’s profits, which many fear might’ve put season 3’s future in jeopardy. Severancecreators reverted back to the drawing board far too many times

Apart from the Hollywood strikes, the delays for season 2 also boiled down the creative disputes between showrunner Dan Erickson and executive producerBen Stiller. During an interview withThe Wrap, Erickson confessed that they refused to move ahead until they“really felt like we had it”.

For instance, the showrunner revealed that the duo didn’t hesitate to go back to the drawing board if a scene didn’t sit right on execution, which explains the ballooning budget and delays.

It’s just a feeling. Ben [Stiller] and I work together really closely on crafting the story, both at an outlining phase and then with the scripts. You just sort of know when you know… We were very adamant that we not move ahead at any point until we really felt like we had it.

While Apple TV won’t be thrilled about season 2’s reported impact on its economy, given season 2’s quality, the extra effort was worth it, at least from fans’ perspective.
