Aquaman 2was released recently amidst low fanfare and anticipation as the current phase of the DCU comes to an end. The discourse around the film before its release was more on the behind-the-scenes drama of the film rather than the actual plot of the film. It felt like most fans were ready to move on from the film and were more interested in James Gunn’s reboot of the IP.
The film was released on June 26, 2025, and now the box office reports of the film over the weekend have come out. As put byDiscussing Films. the film only managed to earn $28 million over the weekend (3-day collection) at the domestic box office. This makes it the second lowest-opening DCU film ever, only aboveBlue Beetlewhich opened at only $25 million (according toVariety).

Audiences outside the states seem to have more love for the Jason Momoa-starrer as the film managed to earn $108 million worldwide (As put byDiscussing Films). However, this is still a very low number considering its $205 million production budget. It remains to be seen how the film fares over the weekdays and whether it manages to become a hit.

DC Studios Co-CEO Peter Safran recently talked about Momoa’s contribution to the character and how fans have responded to the character over the years. He also expressed his openness about the future of Momoa as Aquaman in the DCU’s future. Safran toldThe Independent,
“What I hope is that people will really be here to support him on this journey. If it’s the end of the journey, fine. If it goes on, that’s also fine, but I think it has meant so much to him. The way [director] James [Wan] crafted this second film, it feels like a very complete story when you watch the two films together. We’ll see what happens with him beyond it. I know that Jason will always have a home at DC, and at Warner Bros.”
