After releasing its first game back in 2018 withThe Messenger, Sabotage Studio has today unveiled its next project and it’s a far cry from what you might initially expect.

Sea of Starsis the name of Sabotage’s upcoming game and it sees the studio spurning the 2D platformer genre to instead jump into the realm of RPGs. The game takes a lot of inspiration from classic RPGs of the 90s such asChrono Triggerand features a turn-based combat system.Sea of Starsalso features a vast world that you can sail about, six playable characters, and a day/night cycle that you can change on a whim. The latter of these mechanics plays a large part when it comes to certain features such as puzzle-solving.

Perhaps coolest of all,Sea of Starsactually takes place within the same universe asThe Messenger. Chronologically, the game is set a few hundred-thousand years before the events ofThe Messenger, but those who played the previous Sabotage title might be familiar with howSea of Starslooks to tie-in. Furthermore, Sabotage has said that all future games it creates will also be set in this same universe.

Alongside today’s initial reveal, Sabotage has also announced that it is looking for help to support the development ofSea of Starsvia Kickstarter. Aiming to earn $90,760, Sabotage told us that Kickstarter is a way for them to gauge whether or not there is genuine interest and fan support behind this project before beginning full production. Compared toThe Messenger,Sea of Starswill be a much more costly game to make and is planned to be the only project that Sabotage works on over the coming years. As of now, no publisher is attached to the project, either, making this initial upfront money really beneficial for the developer.

For more information on the game, you’re able to check out theSea of StarsKickstarter page. For now, platforms haven’t been confirmed outside of a broad aim for PC and consoles. As for the release window, Sabotage says thatSeas of Starswill take two more years to develop and aims to launch in 2022.

Stay tuned over the next day as we’ll have a more extensive preview to share with you forSea of Stars.
