Anime opening and ending sequences often set the mood for the whole series, but they also figuratively portray the deeper symbolisms underlying the anime. Similarly, Science SARU depicted a hidden layer of the story withDandadan‘s cheerful ending sequence, which focuses on an unexpected depth of Turbo Granny’s story.

In the initial episodes ofDandadan, the anime-only viewers were unfamiliar with the cat doll that was being shown in the ending theme song. In episode 5, the yokai mascot was revealed to be Turbo Granny, however, the mystery still doesn’t end there.
At first glance, the ending sequence is a playful montage showing Turbo Granny in her cat doll form, running around and engaging in amusing antics. But a closer look reveals a sad metaphor about the story depicted through an upbeat song.

The Hidden Metaphor inDandadan‘s Ending Theme
InDandadan‘s ending song, titled,TAIDADAby ZUTOMAYO musical group, the imagery seems to represent Turbo Granny’s cat doll form’s quirky essence. At the beginning of the song, she seems to be doing crazy things such as running around aimlessly and playing with a hair dryer and a ball.
However, upon deeper analysis, these imageries perfectly capture Turbo Granny’s internal struggle through seemingly joyful visuals. The cheerful song and whimsical imagery of the cat doll running around may appear lighthearted, but they subtly reflect her longing for freedom and her former identity. Her playing with the hair dryer demonstrates her inability to reclaim the speed and autonomy she once had.

Turbo Granny’s joy in running as a yokai has been replaced with an endless chase in a form that restricts her true nature. Moreover, in the song, the kitten she is seen taking care of in the song actually appears later in theDandadanmanga. This scene also metaphorically connects her comforting the tortured girls’ spirits and guiding them to the afterlife.
Who is Acrobatic Sara Sara? The Urban Legend that Inspired Dandadan’s Acrobatic Silky
Science SARU has done an excellent job of weaving emotional depth into lighthearted moments in this ending sequence ofDandadan. Turbo Granny’s journey from a terrifying yokai to a powerless cat doll is both tragic and humorous, reflecting themes of loss, identity, and adaptation.
Turbo Granny’s TransformationinDandadan
Initially introduced as a fearsome yokai with supernatural speed and malevolence, Turbo Granny soon became one of the complex and favorite characters within theDandadanuniverse. In episode 4, Turbo Granny inhabits Okarun at the last moment of their fight, attempting to hide inside his body till she gets her powers back to kill everyone.
However, she meets her matchin Seiko, a powerful exorcist, and Okarun’s grandmother, who traps Turbo Granny’s consciousness in a cat doll. Yet, her powers; her core essence as a yokai, remain with Okarun. This separation leaves her powerless, bewildered, and bitter. The once-feared yokai is now a shadow of her former self, forced into a new and unfamiliar existence.

While Turbo Granny’s current state in theDandadananime is pitiable, her interactions with Okarun and the rest of the group offer a path to redemption. Despite her reduced powers, Turbo Grannyremains a vital partof the team, often providing comedic relief and insights into the yokai world, which in turn, hints at further potential growth for her character in the storyline.

Thus, the blend of humor and melancholy in the ending sequence highlights the layered storytelling that makesDandadansuch a compelling series. Fans who look closely will appreciate how the sequence transforms a playful moment into a somber reflection on Turbo Granny’s transformation, and perhaps, also her ultimate redemption.
