Deadpool may be a neurotic, wisecracking, and needy mutant mercenary with a sharp wit and excellent combat skills, but his onscreen counterpart is a much greater mastermind than him. While Ryan Reynolds has already proven to be one of the best geniuses in the entertainment industry through his excellent business ventures, he has also proven his excellence by saving his films.

For one, had it not been for Reynolds, the first installment in his critical and commercial blockbusterDeadpoolfilm series probably may not have seen the light of day. Because of an incredibly barbed move that 20th Century Fox ended up pulling at the 11th hour of the making of the movie, the movie could have been met with a lot of problems, had Reynolds not saved it.
The abrupt move 20th Century Fox pulled risked the making ofDeadpool
Back when it was originally decided to adapt Wade Wilson’s anti-hero arc from the comics into live-action andRyan Reynoldswas brought on board to the titular character, nobody knew it would become as massive of a smash-hit success as it is today, having its third installment –Deadpool & Wolverinebecoming the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time.
Perhaps for this reason as well, 20th Century Fox decided to pull off a rather abrupt move that could have led to serious halts in the production of the film in the first place: They slashed the budget allotted at the last possible minute. Per details byThe Hollywood Reporter, the movie originally had $72 million awarded to it before it was cut down to $68 million at the eleventh hour.

Of course, the original budget in itself is surprising if compared to the respective budgets that are usually allotted to all these superheroes and comic-book-based movies in today’s day and age – a figure that stands at around $200 million or looms close by. That said, the slashed budget sounds even more unbelievable to be enough for a film of this magnitude.
However, that’s exactly when the real-life counterpart decided to jump into the picture and save the day, like the ultimate hero that he is now so loved as on the big screen. Using his genius brain, Reynolds, at the helm of the movie, ended up making some of the best decisions for his masterpiece as he made sure the allotted budget was more than enough for the making of the piece.

How Ryan Reynolds savedDeadpoolpretty outstandingly
As fans of the mastermind must already know, Ryan Reynolds is actually pretty good when it comes to racking his brain for ideas that couldhelp him sleep peacefully at night, knowing his wealth will only be increasing, even without all of his movies becoming cash cows. When it came down toDeadpool 1, he did the exact same thing without hesitation.
Not only did he rub it in 20th Century Fox’s face by further saving $10 million from the film’s budget by managing to make it at only $58 million (viaBox Office Mojo), but he even derived some of the most creative marketing campaigns for the film. For one, there was the billboard featuring a skull, a poop emoji, and the letter L –Dead-poo-L– which was practically brilliant.

That was that and the rest was history as the movie didn’t hesitate to break quite a lot of barriers and expectations and become one of the best R-rated films of all time. If anything, it even became the top-grossing R-rated film of all time back then besides its critical success by making more than $782 million in worldwide ticket sales on its meager $50 million+ budget.
All of this said, it’s undeniable that Reynolds deserves a lot more credit for saving his blockbuster and critical masterpiece from 2016 when even the distribution studios balked at the idea and pulled some really b***y moves. But, then again, it’s Wade Wilson’s real-life counterpart we’re talking about here, so could you expect any less?

Deadpool is currently available to be streamed on Disney+.
