Now, Hopoo has revealed a remastered version of the original Risk of Rainwith a new traileras part of the Inside the House of Indies: Holiday Event showcase. The game’s description on Steam indicates the overhauled version will include new survivors, updated multiplayer, as well as including content brought back over from Risk of Rain 2. That sequel expanded the game’s scope from a 2D platformer to a third-person shooter format, so it will be interesting to see how elements from that one are brought into the side-scrolling world of Risk of Rain Returns.

TheSteam pagealso includes a ‘Dev Thoughts’ post, with Hopoo Games community manager Jonathan reintroducing players to Risk of Rain and taking them through some of its features for the remaster. The post confirms further updates to the game, including new HD pixel art and enhanced audio, along with rebalancing and gameplay tweaks. New items, enemies, plus stages and interactables are also being added, some being the aforementioned content brought over from Risk of Rain 2, some others being brand-new.

The revamped multiplayer in the remaster will likely be of most interest to players. The original Risk of Rain required some work on the part of players utilizing router settings to connect the game to play with others. This was simplified a bit when Steam introduced Remote Play Together in 2019, but now Risk of Rain Returns will be fully integrated with Steam, simplifying things even more. It has yet to be confirmed whether or not this multiplayer functionality will also be integrated into the Switch version of the game.
