Francis Ford Coppola made the shocking decision to fund his projectMegalopolisfrom his own pocket through his winery. The veteran filmmaker has been trying to get the film off the ground for decades, but it has been delayed many times due to revisions and false starts.

After selling a part of his winery estate, he was able to finance the movie. It was a passion project that started when he was doing 1979’sApocalypse Now. Its ambitious plot is its selling point, but the changes in his life, according to Coppola, were what drove him to bring it finally to the screen.
Francis Ford Coppola Created His Passion Project For The Children
There is a great risk in self-supplying the budget forMegalopolis, but it is more than just a dream script now forFrancis Ford Coppola. The 85-year-old director has put all of his chips on the table for his upcoming sci-fi epic movie and he admitted doing this project for the children.
“For some it is a Disaster, nonsense, pretentious”: Francis Ford Coppola’s $120 Million and 40 Years of Work is in Jeopardy as Megalopolis Branded a Failure by Many Critics After Cannes Screening
While speaking onJake’s Takeson YouTube, the filmmaker reflected on the films he made in the past and how they somehow managed to seep through his own life. He noticed that when he creates characters, their tragic fortunes mysteriously happen to him. He made an example of a character who lost his child, and it’s sad to know that Coppola also lost his own son in a boating accident.
This became a wake-up call for him to create a film that evokes happy feelings. As a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Coppola feels the need to create a positive world for the children.

With all my heart, I want the children to have a beautiful world. But the world looks like it’s a mess today, so I wanted to address that in this film, and that’s why I made Megalopolis.
Perhaps this is why he was ready to shell out$120 millionfrom his own bank account. He has seen the horrors of the world and he wanted to give hope to the new generations. The story ofMegalopolisis the same: the architect Cesar Catilina works to rebuild the world as a sustainable utopia after an accident destroyed New Rome.

MegalopolisIs A Movie About Hope
Some may not be a fan of Coppola’s movies and his filmmaking methods, but his general vision forMegalopolisis definitely the aspiration of many. Apart from conceiving a utopian metropolis for the children, he also believed that humans are capable of dealing with everyday challenges and building a beautiful world. “It’s a hopeful film,” stated the director viaThe Hollywood Reporter.
