Over the years, the isekai genre has become infamous for having some of the most subpar-quality anime. Only a few anime have escaped the general perception and dislike that are usually targeted at isekai anime,Re:Zerobeing one of them. However,Re:Zeroisn’t completely flawless either. The most controversial aspect of the anime is its protagonist, Subaru. He setsRe:Zeroapart from other anime from the genre.

In its three seasons, he has grown into a better version of himself. He is the primary source of the range of emotions fans feel, from anguish to empathy. So what weighs down the anime is also what makes it so special to fans. Here’s how Subaru is the heart ofRe:Zeroand also what makes the anime stand out from the modern isekai lot.
Re:Zero, its Reception, and Subaru at the Center of it All
Released in 2016for the first time,Re:Zerohas garnered a loyal fanbase over the years. With Season 3 airing currently, all those fans are glued to their screens awaiting every new episode.Re:Zerodefies the isekai genre with its weak protagonist. Instead of rising to the top and becoming an overpowered and god-tier character, Subaru is the exact opposite of that.
Re:Zero Season 3 Aimed to Undo a Major Series Mistake that Could Have Easily Ruined its Mammoth Fame
Subaru’s character development is special because fans have seen him at rock bottom for a fair amount of time. He’s flawed, but that’s what makes his journey so interesting and painful to follow. Sometimes he’s highly relatable while other times you can’t help but shake your head at his antics. Subaru is the heart and soul ofRe:Zero, albeit a really flawed and imperfect one.
Re:ZeroPuts Subaru Through Hell, and That Makes the Anime Special
Mostly up to no good as a NEET in his previous life, Subaru gets transported to a fantasy world. Unlike many other protagonists, he’s not the perfect and powerful guy. He’s not much different from his previous life, which in itself is a refreshing twist. However, Subaru is not exactly likable at the beginning. He’s extremely weak and suffers a lot throughout the first season.
His ability makes him go through frequent deaths, and he suffers immensely from each one of them. His despair from the suffering and the unmet expectations becomes unbearable after a point. But, most of his deaths are bone-chilling and difficult to sit through. He fails as a protagonist because he’s too weak and dwells on his weakness. Instead of using all the help he can, he refuses it to a great extent.

As the story progresses, he grows more accustomed to his ability and understands those around him. From a weak and whiny individual to a reliable person who tries to understand the optimal use of his abilities, Subaru has come a long way. And season 3 shows the peak of his character yet.
Re: Zero Voice Actor was Irritated by Subaru’s Character Until One Moment Saved Him From the Fans’ Wrath
After his death in thefirst episode, he tried to defeat the Sin Archbishop by himself to protect others, but eventually took their help when he needed to. He has become way better at analyzing situations and not giving in to his emotions, as we saw how he chose to leave Gluttony behind irrespective of how he felt. Subaru’s suffering and his erratic emotions makeRe:Zerodifficult to watch sometimes, but it’s also what gives life to the series.
Re:Zerois available to stream on Crunchyroll.
