Quentin Tarantino had a clear retirement plan, something very unconventional for Hollywood actors/directors. He once shared he wanted to quit films before he turned 60. Another time, he shared that he would end his glorious run with his tenth film. Well, the filmmaker will turn 62 this March, and viewers have little clue about what his final movie is going to be.

As per his latest remarks, Tarantino will not begin the production of his film for at least another two years. The director shared that he wanted the film to be an experience for his son Leo, who is five years old now. He further shared that he would turn his attention to the stage until then.

A year back, Tarantino’s final film was teased to beThe Movie Critic. However, the plan for that film was officially dropped back in April 2024. Brad Pitt was reportedly set to play a role in the film, with some hinting that he was about to reprise his role fromOnce Upon A Time… In Hollywood. Reports also suggested the involvement of Tom Cruise.

Quentin Tarantino’s last movie will only move forward when his son is at least 6

Quentin Tarantino‘s recent appearance at the Sundance Film Festival and his little chat with Elvis Mitchell have provided some clarity about his final film to his fans. Tarantino flew in from Israel, where he is spending a great time with his wife Daniella, a son Leo born in 2020, and a daughter born in 2022.

What Makes “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” So Unique?

Tarantino’s last film wasOnce Upon A Time… In Hollywood, which came out in 2019. He has been in the process of writing a new script for what he claimed to be his final film. When Mitchell questioned the director about the progress of his writing, Tarantino shared that he was in“no hurry”to enter production of the film.

TheJackie Browndirector further discussed how he was balancing his career as a 30-year-veteran in the film industry andan abba to two very young children. He shared that he wanted his children to be able to understand what he was doing on the set. He shared (via Variety):

What Makes “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” So Unique?

I’m in no hurry to actually jump into production. I’ve been doing that for 30 years. Next month my son turns 5, and I have a two-and-a-half-year-old daughter. When I’m in America, I’m writing. When I’m in Israel? I’m an abba, which means father. The idea of jumping on a voyage when they’re too young to understand it is not enticing to me.

So, when does the director intend to jump into production? He told Mitchell that he wouldn’t make the film until his son“is at least 6.”He shared,“That way he’ll know what’s going on, he’ll be there, and it will be a memory for the rest of his life.”Interestingly, Tarantino considered his daughter a genius and told Mitchell that she would“just get it.”

Tarantino told Mitchell that he was currently writing a play, which will be his next project. While the transition from the big screen to the stage might not be comfortable for the director, his rant about the industry later in the interview explains why he chose the stage at this point. He further shared that if his stage gig becomes a smash hit, he would make it into a film. Tarantino shared:

If you’re wondering what I’m doing right now, I’m writing a play, and it’s going to be probably the next thing I end up doing. If it’s a fiasco I probably won’t turn it into a movie. But if it’s a smash hit? It might be my last movie.

As for thePulp Fictiondirector’s tirade against the industry, he is truly unapologetic in questioning the kind of movies released today. He shared that a play is a big deal and a genuine challenge to pull off, unlike movies. He shared,“Well, what the f**k is a movie now? What — something that plays in theaters for a token release for four fucking weeks?”

He further added that he didn’t get into the industry for this“diminishing returns.”His attack mainly targeted the streamers, who significantly decreased the theatrical run of the films. Tarantino revealed nothing else about his play, which makes us clueless about his potential tenth film.

In his crew, Tarantino might’ve brought in Stacey Sher as a producer and Victoria Thomas as a casting director after working with them in his previous film. The film was supposed to start filming in early 2025, but it was announced on July 07, 2025, thatThe Movie Criticwas officially dropped.

There was no exact reason provided. However, one source shared with THR,“He has a lot of scripts that he’s thrown away”, adding that he liked the idea of“going out on top.”Tarantino himself shared once during the Adobe Max creative conference:
