Sad news for Ezra Edelman fans—Netflix and The Prince Estate have decided that the new documentary about the life of the famed singer should not see the light of day. It was reported that the filmmaker spent almost five years researching and working overnights to finish the project.

The said documentary, which is reportedly nine hours long, would feature the highs and the lows of Prince’s career, including personal stories and interviews with his past lovers, friends, and business associates.
Ezra Edelman’sPrincedocumentary blocked from release by The Prince Estate
Fans were shocked by a joint statement from Netflix and the Prince Estate announcing that Ezra Edelman’s documentary has beenofficially shelved. As shared byDeadline:
The Prince Estate and Netflix have come to a mutual agreement that will allow the estate to develop and produce a new documentary featuring exclusive content from Prince’s archive. As a result, the Netflix documentary will not be released.

Almost five years in the making as perThe New York Times, thePrincedocumentary contained archived materials from “the vault” that Netflix has accessed exclusively for reportedly tens of millions of dollars. It included unreleased recordings, concert footage, and master copies of his songs, drawings, and photographs.
The documentary would have revealed a lot aboutPrince’s life as he was considered a very private person. However, the singer’s private collections weren’t the issue—it was the allegations of physical and emotional abuse.

The estate was allowed to review the project, and whatever they found there must have been very controversial. They blocked the documentary’s release, and a September article from theNYTrevealed that it features testimonies from his past lovers with whom he had a tumultuous relationship. Jill Jones, for one, talked about one instance where Prince allegedly slapped her. Susannah Melvoin, on the other hand, reportedly revealed the singer’s controlling nature.

The outlet also revealed that Edelman was able to discover the traumas of Prince’s childhood, which was conveyed in the documentary. Primary Wave Music and Prince Legacy have both remarked that they are working on resolving the issue about the documentary to ensure that the singer’s story will be told in a factually correct way.
Netizens want to see the canceledPrincedocumentary
OnX, fans have expressed their dismay over the decision not to release Edelman’sPrincedocumentary. They demand to see the director’s project, while others encourage the public to boycott the new documentary prepared by Netflix and the estate.
The director of@OJMadeInAmerica, Ezra Edelman, spent 4.5 years making a 9-hour documentary about Prince: a masterpiece of art and journalism.Prince’s estate fears the film will “cancel” him. Netflix won’t let you see it.But@Wesley_Morrisand I did ⤵️https://t.co/snEknb5UYgpic.twitter.com/3UbLgdNxC4

Ezra Edelman spent 5 years working on an exhaustive doc of Prince, who I consider THE musical genius of my lifetime. The estate didn’t like the warts and all approach of the 9-hour film and have successfully blocked Netflix from ever releasing it. Chickenshit.
We should totally boycott whatever sugarcoated BS documentary@netflixand@Prince’s estate tries to roll out. We deserve to see Ezra Edelman’s film. He spent 5 years crafting it, let the fans be the judge.

Not happy about this, I was looking forward to seeing this documentary showing the true Prince.
Ezra Edelman is a brilliant filmmaker. Such disrespect to all the hard work he put into this film. I hope it leaks.
The director has not made any comments regarding the issue, but hopefully, we’ll get a statement or two in the coming days. Make sure to stay tuned for more updates on the controversialPrincedocumentary and future projects from Edelman.
