Normal-Types have long been underrated in thePokemonseries. Normal-Types are marked by their neutrality against every Type except fighting. Because of their lack of weaknesses and their widely available move pool, Normal-Types are best used to help cover a weakness on your team.

InPokemon Scarlet and Violet, some of the best Normal-Types available have secondary types, changing their weaknesses, but still maintaining a great available move pool and specializing in one like Grass or Dragon. Whether you need better Type coverage for your team or there is a particular Normal type you’re looking for, here are some of the best Normal-Types in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.

Updated by Day Young on July 22, 2025: The Pokemon Home update for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet adds the ability to connect to Pokemon Home, which adds some Pokemon from previous games, allowing them to be transferred into the Paldea region. This list has been updated with a few entries based on some of the new Pokemon available, and also a few entries that were already available but weren’t on the list prior.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Oinkologne

15Oinkologne

Lechonk quickly became a fan-favorite Pokemon when it was first revealed, but it isn’t very powerful. Its evolution, Oinkologne, also doesn’t have much to offer compared to other Normal-Types.

Oinkologne has good Speed and Attack, but very lackluster Speed. Its average-tier defensive stats don’t do enough to help save it from much faster opponents.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Maushold

14Maushold

Maushold is a pure Normal-Type with very average stats. It has high Speed, but every other base stat is between 65 and 75. It has access to Hypervoice, which is a 90 Power move, but Maushold simply doesn’t have the stats to make such a good attack move actually useful.

Its Cheek Pouch ability allows it to heal itself after consuming a berry. Maushold can function as a decent Normal-Type during the early game before better options become available.

Slaking In Pokemon Scarlet And Violet’s Pokedex

Slaking is a Generation III Pokemon with one of the strangest gimmicks Game Freak has ever added to the series. Its legendary tier stats were cut back by one of the worst abilities ever added to the game: Truant. Truant forces Slaking to skip every other turn. Because of this, Slaking is not good for much more than a challenge run in whatever game you use it in.

Even so, the lack of great Normal-Types in Scarlet and Violet natively, along with Slaking’s great stats, do warrant a place on this list. It can be caught in the North Western part of Casseroya Lake. Alternatively, Vigoroth evolves into it at level 36.

tauros sword and shield

Tauros somehow managed to finagle its way into receivingthreenew forms in Scarlet and Violet. All are visually identical, but they have different subtyping between Fighting, Fighting/Fire, and Fighting/Water – none of which are its base Normal-Type, making them ineligible to be ranked among Normal-Types.

The time of Tauros being one of the definitive competitive Pokemon from Red and Blue is long gone, and those of you hoping to recapture that glory will likely look toward its new forms. If just plain Tauros isreallywhat you are looking for, you’ll have to find good normal TMs, as Horn Attack, a 65 power physical Normal-Type move, is the only such move Tauros learns before Thrash at level 50.

11Ursaring

Ursaring is readily available in the Paldea region, but it is a step back from its Ursaluna form fromPokemon Legends: Arceus. Ursaring can be caught in North Eastern Paldea.

While Ursaring’s high Attack (130) and great ‘Guts’ ability – which ups its attack when inflicted with a status condition – are nice, its middling early-game move pool makes Ursaring hard to recommend for anyone other than diehard fans.

10Cyclizar

New to Scarlet and Violet, Cyclizar has speed and not a lot else. It has great typing for the early game as a Dragon/Normal-Type, and it has solid enough base stats for a Pokemon you won’t need to evolve.

Sadly, its learned moves, while decent, take too long to learn to be useful. If you are really dying for an early-game Dragon-Type, it might be worth a look, but it’s hard to recommend Cyclizar for any other reason.

Pyroar is a Fire/Normal-Type with the definitive glass cannon stats. Its good Special Attack and Speed stats mean it can quickly get off Fire-Type moves with some reliability, but its bad defenses and health give you limited options in how to use it.

Fire/Normal offers good defensive typing, giving Pyroar 6 resistances and a Ghost immunity, so in optimal situations, it should survive longer than normal.

Braviary is a Normal/Flying-Type whose skill lies in its ability to use strong physical Flying-Type moves. Moves like Bulk Up aid its ability to use physical moves like Brave Bird and Giga Impact.

Without overwhelming speed, it can be difficult to set up, and its low Special Attack stat (57) is limited in what Flying moves it can use, but its Normal subtype opens things up for more physical based Normal-Type moves.

The final evolution of Smoliv, Arboliva is a Grass/Normal-Type with great defensive stats. Its modest 78 HP stat and bad defensive typing hold it back from being a more Defense-focused Pokemon, but great learned special Grass moves in Petal Dance and Energy Ball best take advantage of its 125 Special Attack.

Arboliva does have its own original ability, ‘Seed Sower,’ which switches a battle to a grassy terrain when hit by an attack. Grassy terrain will boost the attacking power of Grass-Type moves, along with healing Grass Pokemon by a small percentage at the end of every turn. This helps Arboliva’s survivability somewhat, and it might be worth giving a look just to try out this unique ability firsthand.

6Farigiraf

Girafarig’s new form takes it from an okay mixed attacker that couldn’t stay in long because of its poor HP and bad defenses into a more reliable mixed attacker with much more Hp, albeit it is a bit slower.

As a Normal/Psychic Pokémon, Farigiraf is able to safely use the physical Normal attacks and special Psychic moves that are typically associated with those two Types. Its only outright great move of either Type it learns through level-up is Psychic at level 50, so you will have to grind for TMs if you plan on using Farigiraf effectively.
