Phasmophobiais a game that spawned several copycats and a dedicated player base due to its innovative nature. Despite attempts to copy its success, it is still one of thebest games about ghostsout there. Now developerKinetic Gameshas knocked it out of the park once again with its latest major update - known as “Progression 2.0” or “Ascension.” This update aims to rebalance several evidence types, add a more impactful sense of progression to the game, and overall make the game more rewarding.

However, because of the update’s expansive nature, players can expect it to shake up the meta, change their priorities, and even reset their level. Keep reading for more about this update, what it contains, and how to progress in the new system.

What Is Progression 2.0?

Progression 2.0, a.k.aPhasmophobia: Ascensionis the name developers gave to one of Phasmophobia’s biggest updates (which was released on August 17th, 2023). The update comes in three parts:

These changes will substantially change the meta of the game, especially for players who are just starting out. It will also give veteran players something to spend all of their extra cash on.

Part One Changes

The major change in this update is the level reset and change to the leveling system. In the new system, players will unlock upgraded gear as they progress. There are a total of 60 equipment items now in the game - 3 for each category. To unlock a new piece of gear, you’ll need to level up far enough, and then spend a certain amount of money to unlock it. This can be done in the lobby (the warehouse where you normally select your contract) on the computer console.

Part Two Changes

The major changes here will be a more accurate Photo Rating System, an expansion of the tasks available to players for each contract, and massive changes to how Freezing Temperatures work. Essentially, since the release of the game, players could rely on their visible breath as an indication of freezing temperatures. After these changes, however, your breath will show up before a freezing temperature is reached and is not a reliable indicator. Ghosts that give Freezing Temperatures as evidence now also take the temperature much lower than before to eliminate confusion.

Part Three Changes

As part of a visual update to the game, Phasmophobia will be receiving new character models and a smarter, more extensive CCTV system for several locations. Not much is yet known about these changes, so it is unclear if your character will still break their back when you look skyward.

What Happens To Your Old Level?

Because one of the first and most noticeable parts of these updates is the level reset, many players may be wondering what happens to their old level. Rest assured that you will receive a customizable badge (seen on your character’s arm) and a plaque in your starting base to commemorate your hard work prior to the leveling changes.

You’ll create this badge the first time you log in after the reset, and the options available will depend on how high your level is. As a result, you’ll be able to estimate the progress of another player prior to the reset at a glance.

What Happens To Your Old Prestige?

Because the game’s prestige system also underwent serious changes in this update, it will also be reset. However, to prevent veteran players from having to unlock difficulty modes and maps a second time, all players will begin at Prestige Level One.

How To Progress In The New System

Progressing in the new leveling system will be heavily dependent on Weeklies and Optional Objectives. This is because you not only need to earn the required level (experience) to unlock a new tier of equipment but also spend a large chunk of money. Once unlocked, however, each tier of the same equipment will then cost the same amount of money to bring on a contract.
