Overwatch 2 came in and cleared what the original Overwatch had in terms of gameplay. The first game felt like all characters heavily relied on abilities as well as countering abilities whereas Overwatch 2 feels more like the characters' abilities are there to help players, but won’t make or break the game.

The game instead has a deeper focus on players having more skill and each character having soft counters versus characters that completely annihilate other heroes. This list is to help both beginners to the series and those who haven’t played for a while or are just starting their Overwatch 2 experiences.
10Understand All The Roles
Players need to know what each of the roles in Overwatch 2 does as not understanding your own team composition as well as the team composition of the team that a player is going up against can lead to wipes that could have been avoided.
Here’s a simple summary of each role:
Tank-Tanks should be focusedon maintaining a strong front line of defense. They have huge health pools and players can use them to their advantage to create space in the battlefield for the player’s team to go in.
Damage Per Second (DPS)- DPS deal out a large amount of damage, and they are some of the best for going behind opponents to get some picks.

Support- Support does just that. They support, and they do this by either healing the team or providing the team with different buffs that they can use like a speed boost to take the upper hand.
9Take Your Time To Learn Heroes
Players that are just starting out need to understand that there are 35 heroes and learning everything about them–if they hope to play/climb ranked one day–needs to be learned. It can seem like a chore to some, but remember video games are fun, so players should try to play through and learn all the heroes.
Taking the extra time to do this will allow players to understand the range of basic attacks as well as the weaknesses and strengths of each character when it comes to mobility or survivability.

8Understand Abilities And Ultimates
In the same vein of taking the time to learn heroes players should also try and understand what every ability in the game does. Some abilities are similar to one another, but, for the most part, the abilities remain one of a kind in the full way in which players must deal with them.

Knowing how to use the abilities and how to counter them will prevent players from feeling like they were caught in a situation where they died of ignorance versus getting outplayed. The same logic applies to hero ultimates–the super strong scary attacks–as knowing all of these will better prepare all players.
7Hero Swapping
Hero swapping is a lot more justified in Overwatch 2. Instead of the game wiping any progress that the player had made in their ultimate when players swap in Overwatch 2, it will give them 30% back on the hero’s ultimate’s cooldown. This incentivizes swapping much more.
Heroes don’t have hard counters anymore. Though this is true, if the player notices that they are getting completely outplayed by a specific hero that they know can be countered by another then the player needs to make sure that they switch heroes.

6Specialize
This is something that players will want to do once they learn all the heroes. Players will need to understand that a player who spends all of their time constantly playing different classes is a jack of all trades but a master of none as the phrase goes.

This doesn’t mean that players have to have a single main that they never get off of, but they must know how to play at least 2 or 3 characters in the same class that can counter different enemies to have a solid Overwatch 2 foundation.
5Positioning
People, please understand that where the player stands matters. Not on some sort of political issue, but where the player’s hero physically, in the game, stands. Some heroes like Genji need to constantly be on the move while others have bigger health pools like Reinhardt and can use shields to defend themselves. Depending on their hero players need to understand where they should be.
Remember that tanks are at the front 90% of the time unless there’s a wild flank, DPS characters can flank if the opportunity presents itself, but need to understand that they should be constantly moving, and supports need to try and stay as safe as possible as having no heals usually leads to wipes.

4Game Modes
There are a lot of different game modes in Overwatch 2, likeEscortthat make it so that players have to either move a payload to an area before the time runs out or players need to prevent the payload from reaching a destination. There is alsoControl, where players must focus on capturing a point while the other team is trying to do the same.
Regardless of the game mode that the player is on, they must always remember that the most important parts of all the game modes are going to be the team fights. It is highly recommended that players try and get a feel for each game mode as it can help players understand objective-based combat in different situations.

3Team Fights
Team fights are this game’s real bread and butter. Team fights will occur frequently, but unless the perfect opportunity presents itself, players should not try to land a team wipe. When they work though, they can be a huge help. It creates a huge time loss where the enemy team can capture an objective or get a large push.

2Basic Strategies
Figuring out how to best the enemy team can be confusing at first. If this is you, then good news! This list can help you with the best starting strategies.
Diving- Diving is when a character jumps in, in the hope of getting a pick and having their team come in after them to wipe. This is especially good for characters that have ults that buff them like Winston or even a hero that has been boosted with Ana’s ultimate which will make the boosted player super powerful.
Steam Rolling- Steam rolling is when a team has a supporting character or any character with a strong defense boost/healing ability and uses the ability to give their team the extra power, and they try to push in by force. Zenyatta is great for this with his ultimate as he offers massive heals andJunker Queenis also great for this as she can get her teammates an extra 100 HP with one of her abilities.
Playing for Picks- Playing for picks is when the team has a DPS kill someone and creates an unfair battle for the team to then rush into and kill the opponents. Usually, DPS characters that are focused on doing heavy damage like Widowmaker, or characters that can flank easily, like Genji, are great for this.
1Communication
As much as every player has probably heard in any guide or tips and tricks article that has anything to do with a multiplayer game on the internet, communicate. This cannot be stressed enough as not knowing how to communicate will lead to death most of the time. Yes, it can be kind of awkward, but think of it as training your leadership skills.
If players are able to effectively say where enemies are and what they are about to do then that leaves room for fewer deaths and teammates who can work together. Be the Elmer glue that tries to hold your team together or have it fall apart like a house of popsicle sticks.
