One Pieceis filled with tragic deaths, and some of them are used to fuel the development of central characters like how Ace’s death pushed Luffy to his brink. Similarly, Kuina’s untimely demise led Zoro to swear that he would become a master swordsman.

However, Kuina’s death has raised several questions over the years. She was destined to be the greatest swordsman and had greater talent than Zoro. So, how could she die in such a trivial manner?

Kuina’s Death inOne PieceWasn’t a Simple Accident

BeforeKuina’s death, she borrowed the Wado Ichimonji sword to battle against Zoro with genuine steel swords. She won the battle, but the celebration was cut short because soon after, she fell down a staircase, and the fatal impact caused her to pass away. But a fan theory suggests that it wasn’t her fall that killed her but Wado Ichimonji itself.

Wado and Enma were created by Shimotsuki Kouzaburou, as revealed in the Wano arc. Enma has a distinct personality and is often considered bloodthirsty inOne Piece. It releases the Armament Haki of its wielder in excessive amounts and cuts more than intended. In fact, it was infamous as a sword that was impossible to master. Wado, despite having a similar origin, has not exhibited any distinctive personality.

Wado might be the true masterpiece of Shimotsuki and possibly more powerful than Enma. If this is true, then Zoro has not been able to pull out the real power of Wado because it hasn’t accepted Zoro as its true master yet. Why? Because the last time it accepted a master, she died the very next day.

Before Kuina’s death, she borrowed Wado Ichimonji, and it might not be just a simple coincidence. Wado might have been the perfect sword for her and it chose her before she was even ready to wield the weapon. Just like Enma, Wado drew out her life force. The reason Kuina died is not because she tumbled down the stairs randomly but because her life force was sucked out of her by Wado.

Zoro Hasn’t Been Able to Draw Out Wado Ichimonji’s Real Power Yet

But why hasn’t Wado affected Zoro yet? There might be a few reasons for it. The first is thatWado hasn’t chosen or accepted Zoroas its master yet. Secondly, it might regret killing Kuina and thus chose to slumber so as not to hurt any more users. As a result, Zoro cannot use Wado’s full capabilities until it wakes from its slumber and accepts Zoro as its new master.

Another possibility is that the life force that Wado extracted from Kuina is enough for it to function for a long time. Thus, it is Kuina who is still indirectly protecting Zoro from Wado’s wrath. But the sword is bound to awaken sometime during the final saga, and it could be the moment that Zoro becomes the world’s greatest swordsman.

The biggest probability is thatWado will awaken in Zoro’s fightagainst Mihawk. He might be pushed to his limits and his zeal and valor could move Wado from its state of inaction. Just like how Mihawk shattered Zoro’s blades except Wado, it might be the sword destined to defeat Mihawk. Zoro might even shatter Mihawk’s Yoru, thus solidifying Wado as the superior sword.

One Piecemanga is available to read on Viz Media, and the anime is currently airing on Crunchyroll.
